I know I am not the only one who has mentioned that my dog is "jealous" of hugs - whenever I hug one of the kids or my husband, she's right there trying to get in between us. I interpreted this in the usual, anthropomorphic light of jealousy. However, I am currently reading "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals," by Turid Rugaas. She lists getting in between two humans, or two dogs, or a dog and a human, as a calming signal dogs use. Her explanation is that when dogs see two individuals close together, they anticipate there may be trouble and go put themselves in between to calm everything down. Apparently, dogs generally go out of their way to avoid conflict and calm everyone down, if you only see their signals and know what they mean. Some of them are pretty well-known, like turning their head, or turning sideways. But some other signals include licking, yawning, and sniffing. So fascinating! Hmmm. It just occured to me. I wonder if this is why Nala gets so upset if a cat comes to sit on me? I always thought she was jealous, but perhaps not. I wonder if I can use this knowledge somehow to help her...

My parents pomeranians bark like crazy every time my parents hug. The boy starts it going nuts at their feet and then the girl chimes in. I think she just barks because he does tho. IP: Logged |

Depends on the dog you are both right. my 2 lovey dovey girls want to get in he hug my dominate male will try to break it up completely if i dont stop him before he starts.LOL dogs see hugging on them as dominate behavior your holing me down going over my back Dominate. do some dogs do well with it others just dont like it. But I really think it has a lot to do with the dog personalty ------------------ IP: Logged |
