3 month old xbreed rescue pup, seems to have settled in well. Couple of minor queries if anyone can help. 1. Toilet trained on newspaper indoors, no problems. When taken outside (every 15mins) will hold onto it no matter how long we stay out, then burst to use the newspaper as soon as we come in. How can I get him to go outside? 2. Whilst outside today he found some poop left by a cat and ate it... is this normal? he doesn't eat his own poop by the way. 3. The last few days he also seems to have developed a "fondness" for his pillow, and keeps trying to mate with it. Again, is this normal? should I stop him, or will he grow out of it? IP: Logged |

1. Try bringing the papers out with you and gradually make them smaller and smaller until he goes on the ground. 2. Dogs LOVE kitty poo. It won't hurt them, but I avoid it anyway. 3. He's probably just playing with his pillow. Still, getting him neutered is always a good idea.

Thanks Jamiya, will persevere with training outside , and will avoid cat poop but not punish if he gets any. He will be getting neutered, we thought three months a bit early and were waiting until about 6 months as the vet suggested. Guess we'll have to presume he is playing just for now... IP: Logged |

I have heard that transitioning from papers to outside can be very difficult, so stick with it! And if there is ever a next time and you have a choice, start with outside training even if it is the dead of winter. When Nala was a smaller puppy, she would have no problem going potty in new places. Now, however, she resists going anywhere she has not already gone before. I had a heck of a time out of town one weekend. She held it for a 6-hour drive and then refused to go outside the hotel. I finally just put her in her crate for the night. The next morning, she STILL wouldn't go until the second or third time I brought her outside. After that, though, she would go in that same spot easily. Which reminds me - always go to the same spot outside for now, and put a command word to it (like "go potty" or "hurry up" or "do your thing" - whatever). And praise when he goes!

The cat poop thing baffles me! Our dogs think the litter box is a treat box!! Grosses me out. They won't eat poop outside, just the stuff crusted with litter (needless to say our poor cat had to get used to a new potty place where the dogs couldn't get to it.) IP: Logged |

Hi! Wellcome!!! and congrats on the new puppy...the cat poop thing really grosses me out!!! but I guess that's normal, I don't own a cat just dogs. Like Jamiya said: it will just take time teaching to train outside, the command words are a very good idea followed with praise when done. The pillow is just play in my opinion also. Good luck and have fun with the puppy! Susan IP: Logged |

Well come and congrats on your new adiition. The problem with house training puppies is if you allow them to go potty on paper then you have to re-train them to use outside. When house training puppies should be taken to a part of the yard you find ok for them to go potty and they will eventually learn this is there toilet area. While out there use a simple phrase like go potty or be quick once he/she has done it then praise them straight after and offer a treat. He is becoming sexually active so really all he is doing is playing with his pillow like jamiya says neutering would be best. As for eating cat poop most dogs do this no-one knows why but they seem to enjoy it before taking your pup outside i would sugest checking for any poop left in the garden and remove it. mike IP: Logged |

The house training thing--- a trick that I used very successfully and am really glad that I did. If you have to train in the house use cat litter. Then when you want to move to the yard, pour cat litter where you want them to go. It worked like a charm for me. If you move to a new yard you can use it again to choose the potty area. Always use the same brand, because it is acutally the smell that they connect with. Just an idea that might help next time. IP: Logged |
