Please I need help. I have a 5 1/2 month old poodle. She is making me nuts with housebreaking. Let me give you my day to day thing with her.
I work all day and she is in the crate for about 7 hours some days she goes without making and some days she makes in the pee only. Well the crate is bigger than her and I don't have it seperated because I didn't want her to have to go and then lay in it. Okay I get home from work and take her right out to go to the bathroom. She goes outside fine through the evening she will go by the door but if you don't have total eyes on her she will make on the mat by the door. Okay at night mistake yes I let her sleep with me, I felt so cruel to leave her in the crate at night too so I made a big boo booo and put papers down in my bedroom and she went fine on them for awhile and now she thinks okay in the middle of the night to make on the rug and not the papers. Please give me advice am I doing something wrong. I thought maybe at only 5 1/2 months old maybe I am in a big rush and she will learn but don't want to make so many mistakes and not correct them and have her making in my house forever.

Please see if someone can let your pup out at noon. Rule of thumb for crate training that I have heard is a pup can "hold it" for one hour for each month old therefore your pup can only make it for 5 1/2 hours right now. By the time she is 7 months old she should be OK for 7 hours. It's just too long to expect a young pup to endure. Good luck.

What Dukesdad said... also, if she sleeps with you throguh the night and is only peeing try getting up in the night with her. If you have an alarm go off in the morning try setting the same alarm for say 5 hours into the night. Once she's waiting till then to go pee and recognises the alarm as pee time you can start setting it a bit later each night till you're at your normal waking up time.
Good Luck.

Do you have a neighbor or family member that might be able to stop by in the afternoon to let her out?
Allowing her to pee on paper and trying to teach her to go outside has likely totally thrown her off as to where she is supposed to go. It would be best to train her to go outside only and avoid allowing her to use the paper anymore. Lots of praise for "going" outside...just be sure you are out there with her so you can praise her the second she has finished. She should get the right idea shortly.

How often do you let her out when you're home?

Up until recently, we took Cameron out about every 2 hrs, so she had no chance of making a mistake. If she drank a lot of water or was playing excessively, it was even more often than that. Cameron doesn't tell us when she wants to go out, though we have tried a million things to teach her, so we have had to learn to give her a set schedule that she can rely on.

I would be very consistent about how often you take your dog out when you are home. When you are home and they are active is a completely different thing than when they are in the crate during the day or sleeping-- they need to go out a lot more. I would try to be on a consistent schedule with how often and when you take her out, and then if you ever see her stand by the door, let her out ASAP- don't give her a chance to make a mistake- and praise her to know end when she goes outside.

I know it isn't fun to have to constantly keep an eye on her, but until she is completely housebroken, you really have to.

I totally agree with not letting her use the papers. I made a big mistake letting her sleep in my room at night that is the only reason why I had the papers down. I know big big mistake. What do I do now. My big problem is at night

What about crating her at night but bringing the crate into your bedroom? At least just until she is completely housetrained.

During the day she has been peeing in the crate. Should I make it small so she could just lay down and turn around. During the night you think since I let her sleep in my bed it would be cruel to now start crating her?
