In the Dr. Fox veterinary column this morning was this report from the United Kingdom's Blue Cross Animal Charity listing the top 10 household hazards for pets:
1. Falls from balconies or windows.
2. Kitchen scalds and burns.
3. Toxic cleaning products.
4. Swallowing objects.
5. Being crushed by heavy objects falling.
6. Chemicals stored in the yard or garage.
7. Raiding trash cans.
8. Getting trapped and crushed in closing doors.
9. Being stepped on, or having children drop them.
10. Electrical wires, washing machines, spin dryers, and car engines.
It appears many of these hazards are cat related as I can't imagine Duke leaping into the clothes dryer but he did eat my electric alarm clock when he was a pup. No harm to him then but he is now crate trained.
Anyone else have an experience with one of these hazards?

We think raiding trash cans killed my stepfathers dog. Not 100% on that though.

As far as the others, I've stepped on my cat a few times but he's still alive.
Samantha just recently swallowed half of a nylabone (nonedible kind). She is still alive too but had to spend a day at the vet.

I have turned on the washing machine with my kitten in there before, it was a front load washing machine and I didn't know he had climbed in. As I walked away I saw his eyes fly past the window. I got him out and hysterically tried to bathe the detergent off him, he survived and never went near it again. Our femle cat now will crawl into the dryer so I just make sure I check it each time.
Witt has always been really good at only chewing on toys or things I give him and he doesn't get into our garbage can...well he gets into a small one in the family room if there are peanut shells in it, he loves to eat those! Dooley will get into the trash and we watch him closely but it is something that offers danger. I worry about them getting burned in the kitchen because they both stay in there with me when I cook, I usually say "heads up" if I am moving a hot pan or something and they back off.

I've never had any problems as yet with any of these things APART from when Jasper was a pup and chewed through a electrical drill that was laying on the ground, I'm surprised she is still with us actually!!

Yeah...I'm suprised my poodle didn't do herself in. Shes gone through MANY an electrical cord in her puppy phase. No amount of hiding the cord or spraying bitter stuff on them kept her away. Ive been through 3 keyboards 4 mice and 2 webcams since I've had her. Oh and 1 vacuum cleaner.

The biggest hazard with Nala is her eating something inappropriate. We think she is really a goat in disguise.

Oh, and husbands. I didn't see husbands on that list. When I was out of town last weekend, my husband thought it would be a good idea to leave Nala outside while he went to pick up the kids at school. Why did he think this? I have no idea. I NEVER leave her outside without somebody home. If he was too lazy to take her to the bedroom and put her in her crate, he should have left her in the family room (she's fairly good for short time periods now, usually) or popped her in the car with him.

So anyway, she managed to break the glass on the back storm door by hurling herself against it. My husband is SOOOO fortunate that there is not a scratch on that dog!!

Needless to say, I was steamed.
