I know this may seem like a dumb question, but at what age can you get your female dog fixed? Just wondering, cause I have a Rottie and Pit and I am going to get the Pit fixed, because I think that would be a weird mix. IP: Logged |

It really depends on your vet. Some vets won't do it any sooner than 6 months of age while others will do it sooner. My female was spayed when she was 4 months old. IP: Logged |

Well, my pup is being spayed here on thursday, a few days shy of being 6 months old. Its usually best to spay before the first heat as it lowers the occurence of cancer later in life. But definitely don't do it before 4 months. Waiting a bit longer allows the female to develop more feminine characteristics, before her hormones are messed with when she's spayed. So, wait until she's about 6 months old, and you should be all right. IP: Logged |

4 months at the earliest. On larger dogs 4 months seems to be the case...sometimes they will wait longer for smaller dogs. Before or at 6 months for sure. Dont wait longer than that. IP: Logged |

Actually, 8-16 weeks is the official recommendation. The younger animals experience less bleeding during surgery and they recover more quickly afterwards. Nala was spayed at 12 weeks and we picked her up the next day and couldn't even tell it had been done (except for the stitches, of course).

Yeah- we had Cameron spayed at about four months, and she recovered within a day. When they are young, I think they bounce back more quickly-- that is just my opinion though ![]() IP: Logged |

Jimiya is right you can spay/neuter as young at 8/16 weeks, because they have advance over the years to be able to do this. This is very common now in shelter anmials, but I think I would wait until the 4/6 month period depending on the type of dog. honeybear IP: Logged |

Our discount spay & neuter clinics (in TN), work for the shelters. They will do it as early as 8-10 weeks. My vet will do it at 4 months. IP: Logged |

My vet always told me 4-6 mo. Because the anethesia (sp?) could harm a young puppy. She disagrees with spaying that young for that reason. But to each his own! I had mine done around 6 mo. IP: Logged |
