I'm thinking about getting either a chihuaha or a poodle, but it depends on which one is easier to train not to bark. My parents cannot stand dogs that bark too much and I have to live with them for the next couple of years while I go to school, so anyone that owns either one can you answer me? IP: Logged |

Hi! did you post this on the toy breeds message boards? that may also help you. Also you can go onto the web and look up both breeds and find out what thier temperment is like. Good luck! Susan IP: Logged |

my experiances with Chiuahuhas, they never shut up. Taco barks and barks and barks...I think he justlikes to hear his own head rattle. A friend of mines does the same. Its annoying, but they are cute dogs. Poodles can be a bit yappy as well, but from my experiances they bark alot less. Really I think itall depends on the dog. IP: Logged |

A friend of mine owns a Chihuahua and he is definately very yippy...although Im not sure she's ever tried to train him not to be. I have a toy poodle and he is pretty yippy too but has gotten alot better about it over the past year. Im sure if you worked on it hard enough you could probably train either breed not to bark excessively. IP: Logged |

POOOOODLE! Dear god get a poodle. I have both and trust me....chihuahuas are NOT freakin trainable. Period. I swear to god I love my dog to death but I cannot train this dog to do ANYTHING. At all! I love my chi dont get me wrong at all...I wouldnt trade him for anything...but I will never again get another chihuahua. If he werent 2 pounds..like if he was one of the bigger 6 pound ones..I probably wouldnt be so thrilled about him either. Anyways...I recommend poodles to EVERYONE. They are FUN...they are versatile..they are smart...trainable...constantly happy dogs. They are beautiful and you can mold them to look however you want. You can shave them all the time and keep them low maintenence and more of a mans dog. You can do the elaborate poodle do and just go nuts. You can dye them with Koolaid and make them fun colors =) (my specialty) Anyways...keep in mind that there will be grooming involved with the poodle. Either invest in a good set of clippers and teach yourself (first few haircuts might be shaky but you will save major dollars in the long run.) Or get a chihuahua...they are much lower maintenence. They also yap their heads off. Poodles are known to be yappy as well but I have NEVER heard anything as bad as my chihuahua. And I used to own pomeranians...queens of yapping. My chihuahua is 10 times worse. He'll keep yipping even if ive got my hand holding his snout shut. Poodles rule! But its up to you. Just my personal experience with the two =) Maybe I got a defective chihuahua =D IP: Logged |

Lol, kela!! Lucy (my chi) rarely barks. The only time she'll bark is when she needs to go potty and I didnt notice her sitting by the front door. Or when someone knocks on the door. I even tried to teach her to speak but she wont!! Shes a very good dog, and listens well. I guess it all depends on how they act as a puppy. Lucy is very submissive. So she listens very well. Shes a smooth coat so I give her a bath once every two weeks. Sometimes more, it just depends if I accidently leave the bathroom door open she'll jump in the shower with me!! I brush her everyday. You wouldnt have to, I just do it because she enjoys it. Lucy isnt hyper at all. Which was a big shock to me. I expected to get a yapper, an ankle bitter, and a hyper dog that never stops running around. Shes exactly the oposite! She loves nothing more then to lay in your lap. Think about the health issues when purchasing a dog. Chihuahuas have problems with their knees and low blood sugar. Of course there are other things but those are the most common. They tend to be a one person dog. They will tolorate other people, but they always have their fav. person. Last but certianly not least, PLEASE choose a responsiable breeder!! Also PLEASE have your pet fixed if not intended for showing. If you do decide to get a Chihuahua let me know. I can point you in the right direction. ~~Carmen~~ ------------------ IP: Logged |

My chihuahua is hyper...barks whenever he thinks he hears something...SUPER submissive...the pee on the floor if hes scared kind...and will not listen to anything. If you try to use any other voice other than a high pitched super happy voice with his name...he freaks out. I'm going to have to have a trainer come to my house I believe. I dont need him to do any tricks..I just need him to go through the dang dog door =P He is physically capable of doing it...and it doesnt hit him and scare him...he just...*tears hair out* You can see him in one of the pictures on the "pink" page...him and one of my parents pomeranians. Both bark too much to me. Why don't you get a bigger dog? IP: Logged |

....probably because she wants a smaller dog. Duh. MistressKela, I thought your chi was a min pin when I first saw him in that picture. Very cute dogs!

All dogs bark. Some more than others, but any breed can be a barking machine. My Canaan Dog/Saluki mix barks at everything and drives me crazy, while my Cocker mix is quieter, but still makes quite a bit of noise when she wants to. I would wait a few years before getting a dog. It would be better to wait untill you are in your own home and have more control over your life... I know you don't want to hear that, but... I have a few questions/ comments for you to seriously think about and answer for yourself before you get any dog. They are 10-20 year commitments. You will need to think 20 years down the line. Since you live with your parents, what will they say or do if or when your dog becomes a barking terror? Will they put up with it, work with you on trying to train the dog, or take the dog to the pound when you find out it's hopeless? Are they willing to help with the care of the dog if you have to work or study late? What about house breaking? It's a royal time consuming pain in the neck. Also having a dog when you are in school limits your life choices. When you move out of your parents house, having a dog will greatly limit your choices of rental housing. Many landloard won't rent to people with dogs. What if you get a job out of town? What will you do with your dog? What if you can't find reasonable housing that accepts dogs? What if your new job has you working 12+ hour shifts? Who will let the dog out for potty breaks? And a final question/ What if your parents don't let you take "your" dog when you finally do move out? My mum did this with "my" cat. LOL Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I don't mean to sound like a big meanie. I just want to be sure you have concidered everything and not just how wonderful doggies are. IP: Logged |

Yeah- I agree that if you're not ready for a dog that barks, you're probably not ready for a dog period... Not to be offensive at all, but all dogs can bark, it doesn't really matter what breed. In addition, often dogs don't bark at all as puppies, but start "expressing" themselves as they get older. In our case, we were all excited because Cameron didn't hardly bark at all when we got her at 3 months- we were thinking "wow, we are lucky to have a dog that doesn't bark..." Well, 7 months later, she is quite the little barker-- at the doorbell, at people walking by outside the window, at squirrels, birds, leaves, rocks, etc. etc. But we love her to pieces anyway. My point is, if you can't get a dog that barks, you might want to either consider rescuing and older dog that has a proven history of being quiet, or wait until you can handle all aspects of a new puppy, whether they be barking, destroying the house, digging up your yard, etc...Good luck! My poodle is only about 28 pounds so she is a VERY small standard (i think she is half mini poodle half standard poodle actually). My chihuahua really really looks like a min pin since his tail broke off when he was a newborn. The breeder said it was just too small and too fragile to make it =/ IP: Logged |
