Hello...I give my lab compressed rawhide all the time because it is better for her then the normal rawhide. She always has a bone available and on average goes through one every two or three days....sometimes even one day. When I notice she is done with one...I give her another. Is this too much...or ok? I give them to her cause I dont want her chewing stuff up at my place and these bones are the only ones she cant eat in a second. So is this alright? IP: Logged |

Winnie, I found in the past that rawhide would give my Lab some really bad gas. If you notice that problem I recommend the Nylabone chew toys. They do cost around $10.00 but last a really long time, six months or more, and my dogs love them. Great for teeth also. IP: Logged |

I feel the need to tell you this. According to my vet, raw hide bones can be poisonous to dogs. I gave mine one and he threw up all night and in the morning. That is when we went to the vet. She told me that some manufactures actually use ARSENIC for a preservative. You might want to ask your vet about this!!! IP: Logged |

There was a thread here on just that and what ones were safe and ones that werent, I would do s searchunder raw hide here, I do Think one a day is too much and go to something that can last longer like the nylabones or something else. I believe one of the problems with rawhide is that the dog can swallow big chunks of it and it is not digestible so it just sits there in their tummies. I have never given Nala rawhide, tempting though it is. About the arsenic - I think what I read is that you should buy only U.S. made rawhide because it has to pass through inspection as a food item (or something like that) so it won't contain arsenic. Avoid rawhide chews made in other countries. Here is one page that talks about dangers of rawhide: http://nmnm.essortment.com/rawhidechew_rbzt.htm I like to use bullysticks (bullysticks.com or in petstores or other online suppliers) but they are rather expensive. Nala sometimes likes the velvet chews, but I really worry about her eating all that plastic-like stuff. Greenies are great, but they are expensive and don't last long. I have tried the edible nylabones, but Nala isn't really interested. So really, we are kind of stumped.
