Now, I just took my dog to a vaccination clinic and I got the super dog pack which gives him all his shots and does heartworm testing. Now this is the first time he is being tested for heartworms and they asked if I wanted to get heartworm prevention tablets. I told the no, because after I get the results I'm taking him to the vet. I thought that the vet was supposed to give them the medicine AFTER the results come back. Now is there a difference in the prevention tablets and the stuff the vet gives them? If so what? what ever you do...do not let your dog have the heartworm preventative injection DON'T use this. I believe it's called ProGuard. Dogs have died from this. It's 6 months worth of peticide in one injection. My dog gets tested every other year and takes the HeartGuard preventative tablet (treat like thing) from April through November. She gets hers even before the vet finishes running the test. An ounce of preventation is worth a pound of cure. I believe even if the dog does have heartworm they'll still have you give the HeartGuard monthly. But again, please do not let the dog have the 6-month injection. IP: Logged |

I can't remember where I read it but I remember reading that giving heartworm preventitive to a dog with heartworms could be fatal. If I remember correctly adult heartworms must be killed and flushed out slowly as flushing them out too rapidly could cause problems. My dogs get tested annually and are put on Heartguard Plus from May - October. When I purchased Heartguard from my vet I was told not to give it to my dogs until I got the results of their heartworm tests back. The shot is Proheart 6. If you do a search, you'll dig up quite a few stories of dogs having problems with it. You do NOT want to give heartworm preventive to a positive dog, for the reasons nern stated below... the worms will die quickly and can cause clots that can kill the dog. Dogs with heartworm usually have to go through a lengthy (and expensive) program that kills the worms at various life stages and flushes them out of the body slowly. Dogs are also kept on heavily restricted exercise regiments, usually only leash walks until the majority of the worms are out, as exercise will get the blood flowing faster, increasing the risk of worms being dislodged and causing problems. Once a dog has been treated for heartworm, they'll start them back on preventive pills, but starting them before they're proven negative is dangerous. IP: Logged |

Hi: You never give heartworm pills to a dog that tests positive. Thats why you have them tested in the first place. I don't know much about Proheart 6 I believe it has not been on the market too long. I live in zone 6 and only during mild winters have I kept my dogs on heartworm pills year round. The past few years, It has been extremily cold in my area. I have chosen to have my dogs heartworm tested around March and then start the pills. The vet treated my dog and recommended the Proheart 6. I was leary about it and had many questions. She assured me it was safe and uses it all the time on her patients. I decided to give it a try due to the fact that I decided that it would be better to give my dogs two injections per year and that way they would be covered for 12 months out of the year and I also would not have to have the blood test done but every two years. So far, my dogs have not had any problems with the injection. I am sure there are many web sites available on the down side of this subject. IP: Logged |

I have never heard of problems from the proheart injection. Both of my dogs gave had it w/ no problems. Does anyone have more info on the negative effects? IP: Logged |
