G'day,
I was wondering about feeding dogs frozen bones...
I have had some people tell me to give my dogs frozen bones because it's like a doggy ice- cream & good for hot days & they love it.. then someone told me that frozen bones chip and splinter just like cooked bones do.
I was just wondering if anyone knew about this?
As I said before not long ago I am researching the raw food diet and am finding it quite fraustrating with the amount of contradicting information out there. For example one source states dogs should not eat pork, then another source tells you to feed your dog pork. I have also heard contradicting info about garlic aswell.
Now everytime someone tells me something or other is poisonous to dogs I am reluctant to believe yet I omit these things coz I'd rather not take the chance.
(I've also heard eucalyptus oil is also poisonous to dogs and they don't recommend washing dog beds/ blankets in detergent containing this.)

I guess though we all have to make up our own minds in the end with what to believe. It's kind of the same with human food... one day you'll be told to take vitamin c tablets, then the next day there will be some news report saying it gives you cancer. Heard the same with milk too!

We had a discussion on Garlic a while back and I think that we concluded that garlic is exceptable in small amounts and if I remeber correctly there was a certain kind of garlic...somebody pipe up if you remember.
I have seen conflicting information on whats poisonous too..a good place to check is poison control: http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=apcc

I can't answer your question about the frozen bones..I think it may depend on which type of bone as to how safe it would be.
I am feeding a raw diet but it is purchased and the bone is finely ground (this was a concern for me, something I worried about, so it being ground made me feel safer) No matter how much you read...bones will be debated, you just have to inform yourself as best you can and then make a choice you can live with.
Pork is also debated.
I have heard not to feed your dogs apple cores, that they have arcenic in them..but I have fed whole apples to my dogs plenty of times, letting them play with them and munch on them to keep them busy, I haven't had any problems, but I now cut the core out.
Hopefully you will hear plent of opinion, get some good links and have something to make a choice with.

My vet told me not to feed frozen bones because it could chip the dog's teeth. My sister feeds frozen bones without a problem.

On my rawfeeding group, they all caution against feeding marrow bones - like leg bones of cows and other large animals. They say there is a big risk for chipping teeth.

Bones of chicken, pork, fish, and I think lamb and goat are smaller and softer and a dog can consume them raw with no problem.

Thanks Maisey and Jamiya, I think in the end it is just a case of making your own informed decisions. Think I might give the frozen bones a miss... but I still feed my big dog marrow bones cut down the middle because he absolutely loves them and it keeps him busy for hours on end.
I guess there are many risks associated with many different things- but we can't wrap our dogs up in cotton wool, we can just do the best we can using the info that we get. Thanks again guys, I'm beginning to take a lighter approach to the feeding and do what I feel is right. I'm still researching and I've joined that discussion board, Jamiya but haven't yet had a look at it, but will do!
