my 3 yr old maltese, which i thought was housebroken, has this tendency to urinate on our new carpet when we are gone. We asked the vet why he does this and he told us its not actually urinating its more like marking his territory, well darn, how many times can he mark the same spot? He also does it if we are in another room, but mostly when we are not home. If anyone can give me any suggestions on how to stop him i would really appreciate it. We've also tried locking him in the kitchen when we are not home but he has staryted to tear at the rug, i dont know what else to do!!!

I am assuming the vet checked for things like a bladder infection and he is healthy. Sometimes new carpet has an odor to it that for some reason dogs like to pee on - or so I have heard.

Is he neutered? If not, that would be the first step.

Second, you need to clean the spots he has marked with an odor neutralizer, like Nature's Miracle, to remove the odor.

Third, if he mostly does it while he is alone, he needs to not be alone! I would suggest crate training him, even though he is not a puppy. And when you are home, keep him with you so you can keep an eye on him. Go back to the basics of housetraining for a while, until this gets resolved.
