I can be cruel sometimes! not realy, but listen to this...

My sister and brother in-law have a yorky/poodle mix. He's a cute little thing, but way too spoiled. They come to visit often and take him everywhere they go. (I understand that, I do the same with Casey) anyhow, we have a doggie door that leads to the backyard, and their dog refused to use it! but they never would give him a chance to learn, the first whimper, and they would open it for him. I tried and tried to tell them just wait! and coax him through with treats, but they wouldn't listen, he was their baby and they would not let him suffer like that. Give me a break!!! they left him here with me to do some shopping, well guess what! He learned to use the doggie door..it took about 5 min. but he now will jump right through no problem! When they returned, I showed them what he had learned while they were gone. They weren't all that happy about it, because they figured I had to torture him to get him to do it...I told my sister: have you ever seen me hurt or misstreat any of my dogs??? my brother in-laws answer: yeah I know but he's (their dog) different, you have to be very gentle with him.

Then the little guy went over to eat some of Casey's food, she growled at him (it was just a warning, she wouldn't have done anything to him) they snatched him up! and were gone in a flash!!! this same dog! pee's, poops and tears up everything in their house, no manners at all! (I do love him, even though it doesn't sound like it, he's a cute little guy! just spoiled)

Give me a break!!!

Just had to share....Susan

Ha ha! I have never had a doggy door, too many problems with skunks in my neighborhood! Ranger just knows to scratch on the back door blinds to be let out.

sounds like their dog might learn how to be a dog if around you (a good thing)...poor dog.

Can't imagine what would come into my house if I had a dog door - bear, bobcats, raccoons, coyotes, fox, fishers (yes I get them all). Imagine walking into my house and finding something foraging (or eating my furkids).

Ha ha! That dog does sound very spoilt Susan!!
I know a woman who owns a dog that she loves to bits- and she lets her get away with murder!!
This dog hides bones in her bed, and she tells me about all the naughty things it does but she can't teach it the right thing to do because she doesn't want to get mad at her... I keep telling her she's making a naughty dog!!! It's quite funny. She once was cleaning the house at 3am in the morning, and she picked up the dog lead to put it away and her dog saw it, so she felt obliged to take her for a walk! I remember this particular night as being one of the coldest on record!!
Ahwell, if they can put up with what they create- let them! At least they are loving owners and not cruel like the owners Maisey was talking about. I can't get over that story about how those people want a new dog- it makes me so mad.

Heh, the best thing is to get another dog to teach your dog how to use the door. Luna learned pretty quick at a friend's place because she was following another dog around to play.

Oh, and you can get special dog doors where the dog wears a transceiver on the collar so the door will only open in the presence of the transceiver. And you can set the direction too so the dog can go in and out, just out, or just in.
