My puppy (12 wks) is really starting to come around, but one weird little thing. He still has those puppy spurts where he just goes psycho and runs around like crazy for a few minutes. But he really never barks. EXCEPT whe he gets into something, like digging the couch or under my chair -- all things he knows he's not supposed to do. He starts barking and growling and it actually sounds aggressive, but he is not usually aggressive at all. Any ideas?

Our puppy (well she is 10 months now), did this all the time as a puppy, and she is not aggressive at all either. She still does it every once and awhile- running around the house like a madwoman making crazy noises- sometimes she even jumps up on us and nips at our clothing- be happy that your puppy doesn't do that Anyway, I think it's just their way of releasing energy- I wouldn't worry about it!

There are aggressive barks and growls, and there are play barks and growls. They are usually quite distinguishable once you learn them. Play barks are usually higher pitched and with our dog, there is space in between - not a series of connected barks if that makes sense.

Warning barks and growls are lower and would be accompanied by different body language - an intense stare, upper lip pulled back in a snarl, hackles raised (maybe), etc.

You have probably never heard this in your puppy, but as the dog grows you will hear both and be able to tell them apart. (Although Nala has never growled and barked aggressively at anything, she does have an "alarm" bark when she hears or smells something she feels is threatening.)

Hi Jeff! remind me of this puppy, I can't remember about his beginings with you. Everything else sounds normal, thats what puppies do! I'm happy to hear he's doing well!

he's a mini dachshund. we had some whining issues at first, those have mostly subsided (except when i go into another room and close the door, but i'm sure he'll come around). we've also had some biting/teething issues, which also have come around (although he is TERRIBLE with guests -- he doesn't let go!!). being so new to this dog ownership world, i find it invaluable to solicit advice of people who've done this before!!!

Thats what puppies do! One minute they will be cute and licking your hand and sitting still and nuzzling in your lap...the next they will be running around in circles barking...digging..eating poop...chewing things..knocking things over....basically..going completely psycho. My teacup chihuahua decided that running up and down the stairs (well at least about 4 of them) was a fun activity when he turned 5 months old. I think it was excitement that he could DO it finally that led to thsi...

Or if your pup needs surgery for any reason..you can always ask for extra doggy sedatives! =D Greatest words I ever read on a label with my great dane puppy..."Will cause sedation. Use as you feel necessary".

my dog, which is almost a yr old, still does all that crazy stuff mentioned, running up the stairs like a manic, biting your sleeve or pant leg as u walk by her, jumps all over the furniture like catwomen (LOL) and she also growls when i play tug of war with her but she is very harmless, just very active. She even tries to play tug of war with our little maltese, also very harmless if she hurts the maltese he will let out a whimper and she knows she did something wrong and she will go up to him with her tail between her legs and lick him like she is apologizing

Oh Yes! I remember now! I too have a mini doxie, that's why this sounded so familar. You sure did come to the right place for advice, the people are great here.

I remember now that I asked you if your doxie liked to burrow, mine does! she will get under and into everything...she loves to sleep under the cover's, not on top like most dogs. she's also very (and I do mean) very stuborn! They are a trainable breed, but difficult. But! I absolutely love her personality..she's sweet, funny and just a joy to have..

Good luck!

hello jefffox,

Sounds like all normal puppy play to me...but I feel obligated to tell you this, (giggling)...if you think your pup will "come around" about you going into a room and closing the door....you are mistaken. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but, YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GO TO THE RESTROOM ALONE AGAIN! and if you do...you will be forced to listen to the complaining through the door. Welcome to the doggie world,LOL.

PS. This same scenario only gets worse if you have children, my youngest daughter is 11 years old and feels perfectly righteous in sitting at the side of the tub and chatting me to death when I try to take a bath. If you think because you are male...you are safe from this, think again! My husband gets the same treatment when he is in the bathroom, she just sits outside the door and merrily chats to him.

Yes Maisey! So true! If Ranger heres me on the toliet, he comes running! If i try to close a door because I will be doing something I don't want him bothering me during or something, the whole time I listen to him outside the door whining and pawing, I have no door that is not scratched! He knows if he comes in, at least to the bathroom, I will pet him. (Sad, isn't it?)

LOL soo true! When we first got Max I used to keep the bathroom door open when in the shower, but that had to end when winter came. He'd get mad if he was stuck in the bathroom with me but then scratches at the door and whines if I locked him out. There is something wrong with this fixer upper we bought because Max can open any door in the house no matter how tight we try to close it. So I too never get to go to the bathroom alone. Oh well wouldn't trade it =). Also Max, at 9 months still does the running around crazy dog thing. My husband and I just sit back and laugh.
