Hi Danecrazy:

Well, Oskar is into about the 3rd week of taping. We tried gluing stays in his ears first. That didn't work cuz the glue wouldn't hold! Now, we are tring the "rack" method. Oskar manages to get the rack flipped upside down which makes his ears point straight forward.

I'm afraid to fully wrap his ears cuz of infections.

Any advice?

Hi there. Well by now the stiches should be out and his ears should be just about healed if not all the way healed. It they are all they way healed do not worry about wrapping the whole ear. I bath both of my girls make sure the ears are very dry and clean. I leave them up for about 5 to 7 days take them down for a day and then do it all over. Wrapping the whole ear is going to help them stand better. I dont remember what kind of crop you did but both of my girls are about medium length and they still are not standing all the way. I have talked to a lot of breeders about this and they have all said it might take until they are about 5 to 6 months old to stand all the way. I have to say I have seen what wearing the rack can do to ears and it is not good. It is just to heavy to do any good not to mention drives the puppies batty. Try taping them all the way for say 3 days let me down half a day then wrap them again. It might make you feel better about not getting an infection in the ears.

Don't be afraid of wrapping his ears. The tampon type device in the ear....wrap it from the base to the tip in tape...and you're done. At three 3 weeks as Danecrazy said..the stitches should be out and the ears should be scabbed over still maybe healing a little bit. You need to wrap the ears all the way I think. I've only been through this once but my danes ears were fully wrapped from day 10 on and they took only a month of wrapping to stand up perfectly.

Hi Danecrazy:

thanks for your reply. The rack method seems to be going alot better these days. I had a new vet tech do it this time, and he taped the rack in such a way as to not be such a bother to Oskar! In fact, he's only flipped the rack a couple of times this week, which is excellent!

I never heard of the rack method not being good for the final outcome of the ears:/ This method (and the gluing method) are both methods I am trying so as to avoid the whole taping mess plus infections, etc.

Can you elaborate a bit more on why you think the rack method would not be good for his ears. I'm trying this method, so he can have total air and control of his ears, plus no messy infections, plus he wouldn't be able to have any kind of control with his ears, plus his hearing might be reduced, etc, etc.

Anyway, please comment on the rack. The rack, BTW, is what the vet is recommending since I couldn't "hang" with the gluing method. They seem to want to stay away from the "whole wrap" method too! BTW, his one ear is alrady standing, the other is still a bit floppy. Pretty good, I'd say. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have too much longer to go. The vet said Oskar had a "very good ear set" for this type of surgery.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I don't understand why people cut dogs ears and tails, it just seems cruel to me. Now my husband would be on your side! The look is so important! but i just don't get it! Shed some light on this for me, is there alott of pain involved with doing this?

Just wondering! Susan

MistressKela:
Thanks you, too, for the wrap advice! I will talk to the vet this weekend about doing the full wrap.

Susan, there is not a lot of pain involved with cropped ears. More aggrivation to the pup having to wear the e-collar after surgery, I think . . .? Oskar was up and playing the same day as surgery, as well as eating. No yelping or crying, either.

So, I don't believe there is pain involved, but then Oskar can't talk . . .
