I have a 13 year old heeler/kelpie cross and was wondering if anyone knows the maximum age a dog can father puppies.... I am hoping his age rules him out, but he 'got friendly' with a neighbours female when she strayed onto our property and was in season (she is 3) - surely his age would mean he can't father puppies?
Thanks for any help!

I'm not a breeder, but I suspect he is still capable of impregnating a female.

I would think that he would be capable of fathering pups aswell.

Hi A male dog can father puppies right upto the day he dies.
Some males they become infertile with age others still produces strong sperm even in old age.

So i would have to say if your dog has caught the female she is very likely going to be pregnant.

I breed german shepherds and depending on the time of the females heat and if he did mate with her then its hard to say if she was at her ovulation period of her heat saying this sperm can live in the uterus for upto 7days for strong sperm.

If you dog mated with the female your neighbour should count 35days from the first day of mating and the dogs tied and have her examined by a vet to check for pregnancy this can also be done at 21 days after the mating.

Mike.

Thanks for your prompt replies ... I had no idea they could father puppies so old!! I guess we will have to wait and see, I'll let the owner know too so the vet can check her. Thanks again
