I had wanted to begin feeding my dogs real food as opposed to something that comes out of a bag that I swear they eat only because they have to.

Anyways..I was wondering what the basic requirements are? I have a 30 pound dog and a 2 pound dog. I know chicken and rice are an easy base...but what else do they need? Anyone have any good links of exactly what they require? Vegetables of any sort? What percentage meat to rice? A good vitamin?

You might be interested in a book called "Home Prepared Dog and Cat Diets" by Donald Strombeck...you might even be able to find it at the library. It contains several recipes and also guides you on properly supplementing them.

Keep in mind the change over has to be slow and the cost well be more and the work to make it well we were there what can I say but be ready to do some cooking. Our guys still get cooked food once or more per week mixed with there regular food. Talk to your local butcher about buying left over beef fresh trimmings and buy some stuff in bulk, gizzard's.
Two cups brown rice, half cup green beans diced half cup carrots, two cups gizzards diced. pinch of garlic.1/2 spoon of Missing Link powder. Don't over cook veggies they should be firm. We boil gizzards in water and two chicken broth cubs. Save broth to add as needed or make a light gravy. This well be one meal after the transition from old diet if you do a complete change over. You well have to keep and eye on weight and adjust as needed. You can also save egg shells and throw them in your blender making it into powder and add it to the food. (calcium)..You should consider buying a Dehydrator to make dry beef and veg treats. Its end less.....oh don't forget fruits.

Or, you could just feed raw. It's easy, fast, not too expensive, and it's what dogs are supposed to eat.

Tom Lonsdale's book, "Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health" will give you some background info.

Thanks very much for the advice =D

Believe me I know about the gradual bit. For such a ladylike poodle...the gas she gets is the WORST =P
