How old do puppies have to be to get their first bath? They are getting fleas and they kind of smell bad because they don't go out of the mommas house and they pee and poo in there.Right now they are 3 weeks old. IP: Logged |

Puppies that young generally shouldn't need a bath if their housing and bedding is kept clean. You will need to find a *puppy* shampoo safe for puppies and read the label. Some brands will suggest not using on pups under a certain age. You could go to your pet supply store and check. You mentioned they don't go out of the Mommas house and have fleas? Where is the Mothers house? Outside? What do you use for bedding and how often is it changed? - this may be holding in the smell & fleas. How are the pups being taken care of? I.E. fed & handling... or do you let the mother do it all?

3 Weeks is a little too young. I would wait utill they are at least 5wks. As for the smell and fleas, you can use somelight flea powder and be sure to bathe the mother. Make sure you completely get all the shampoo off her teats!!! IP: Logged |

I have to agree they very young but I have found that baby wipes work some what in removing some of the fleas. Be sure to keep them warm and don't soak them down with wipes. When they reach 5-6 weeks if you still have problem and have cleaned bedding and the surrounding area try Ivory soap for a bath. It kills the fleas and helps in dissolving the eggs. I mix and us bleach with dish soap on there area we have not had fleas in or around our yard in years even when our neighbor's have had them. By the lake here and we get sand fleas the kind that are the size of a truck. Also we have used roll tape the kind you us to remove hair from your clothes. Get a glass of water and a pup pick them off and drop them in water. It is a vicious circle clean one and if there area not clean the are right back. I have given bath to that age only because I had know choice, so bad they were anemic and No they were not ours we took them in and had to hand feed them.We did lose two of them. Not sure if it was the fleas or bath but we just had know choice the fleas would have got them all in the end. They were coming out of there eyes and butt, ears. IP: Logged |

Hi! Please don't take this the wrong way, but! I don't Think once a week is enough. The reason i say this is: My mini doxie had puppies on the 15th of Nov. And at least for the first month, I was changing thier bedding three times a day. I do realize that your dogs are outside and perhaps because it's straw and not blankets that would make a big difference. But just from the mess my puppies made in such a short amount of time, I would think it would need to be done more often. I don't realy know though, I've never used hay before. I have read it's the best thing for outside doghouses. Well! Good luck, whatever you decide to do. Susan IP: Logged |
