Eve is 40+ days pregnant, my concern is after letting her out to go potty, which she did(#2) she still tried in vain for 4-6 minutes to no avail. Is this common, or should I be worried? And if so what can/should I do to help? Thanx all, IP: Logged |

What are you feeding her? I have a female that is on her 5th wk. I have noticed alot of different things with her. I give her alot of extra things in her food to help with protein. It makes her have the runs all the time. If you think about a preganant dog is just like a preganat woman. I think if she is irregular give her a little time to come out of it. IP: Logged |

a little pumpkin or squash either canned or raw but well grated can help with constipation. IP: Logged |

Hi this is normal in some females that are in there last stages of pregnancy. High fibre food should be offered or give her weetabix or some cows milk but not too much as milk can make some dogs vomit this will help her with her bowel movements. You can also ask your vet for something to help her go keep a close eye on her. How much are you feeding her as her food intake should be increased around the 5th and 6th week as this is when the puppies go through the rapid growth stage and puts more of a demand on the females body. She should also be wormed 1 week before she is due to give birth and then 2weeks after the pups are born her and the pups will need worming again. The female should only be wormed for roundworm ask your vet for the correct type of wormers for her. If you would like anymore help please feel free to email me. Thanx everyone, well I came home yesterday and someone(probably her!) my male is extremely good about goin potty outside, left me a present on the kitchen floor! I didn't know whether or not to be upset or glad that it was there. And yes it wasn't a solid I had to clean! But that somehow put me at ease a little!?! I'm keeping a close eye on her and I'm letting her out in a few minutes. I will let you all know how things are, as for contcting my vet, both of which I use, one for shots other for ear, tail, dew claws etc. seem oblivious to my inquisitions of pre birth shots. I very much appreciate all the input, thanks again and I'll post asap. IP: Logged |

Hi your dog should not be given any shots if any until after the birth if you were referring to the wormer this is given in either liquid or tablet form she does not need shots for worming. mike IP: Logged |

HI, don't giver her any of the kyro and such. Shes straining due to the added pressure on her pelvis and bladder, its normal. This late in the pregnacy, the puppies are growing at a much greater rate than before, and she's going to start rolling on the ground alot more, straining to urinate and do it much more often than before. YOu'll also knotice her getting much more aggitated. Before she whelps your going to knotice male dogs sniffing around on her and some may try to mount. You need to keep her isolated from other dogs. She smells as if she's coming into heat right before she whelps and this could cause problems with other dogs. Be prepared for when the babies come. Have a vets # on hand 24hrs, a good warm place for her to birth, and clean towles, blankets and a nice quiet place. Good luck. Let us know when the babies arrive!! OH and what kind of dog is she??? Well I have a couple different answers given for the constipation, syrup and pressure on abdomen. I think I'll wait on the xtra fiber. I appreciate everyones input, everything helps. As for the shots tho I'm a little perturbed. I could use some more thoughts concerning this. I noticed a clear liquid formed(not really a discharge but definitely a liquid from her vagina this mornin) but there is NO way she in ready to give birth yet at the earliest she was impregnated at Christmas, and that's 2 days after I noticed her spotting when she was in heat. Thanx again all! Oh, and Eve is a doberman! IP: Logged |

HI cainsevensijin no-one has mentioned about your female given any form of shots wormers do not come in injection form. Bitches should be wormed 1 week before mating and 1week before giving birth also when the puppies are 2weeks old both her and the litter will need to be wormed. I got this info off a website. PREGNANT BITCHES and UNWEANED PUPS. Puppies become infected with roundworms from their mother while in the uterus or through her milk. Pregnant bitches and bitches with young puppies should be wormed frequently. We recommend that bitches should be wormed before mating, after the first 45 days of pregnancy and after giving birth. They should then be wormed with their pups at 2, 5 and 8 weeks and after weaning. It is also possible to worm the bitch daily from day 40 of pregnancy to 2 days after whelping. This will ensure that the pups have an absolutely minimal worm burden at birth. PANACUR (PASTE OR LIQUID) is the most effective treatment. Some dogs also give birth on the 58th day of the pregnancy so please dont think that she should go 63-65days as dogs are like women they give birth when they are ready too the only difference is that vets wont let a dog go over her due date by more than 2days.
