...or he will be, by the time I get home. The shelter worker who is taking him for the weekend called last night, but I was out. By the time I got home, it was too late to take him to her, so she is going to come get him this morning. But I have to work. So I spent the morning with him and said goodbye to him. I had to put him back in his crate because no one else was up yet. I hate that that's the last thing he will remember of me.

I feel like I did everything wrong and that I could make it work if I just work harder at it. But my head says, "At what cost to Nala?"

I think I am just going to sit here and cry. I hope no one comes in needing help today.

Jamiya I am SOO sorry! I have never had to get rid of any of my animals before, but I know that must be hard.

I went through something like this before. The dog was friendly to my other dog who needed a buddy..but unfortunately one of my cats did not make it after provoking the dog. Id only had the dog a week but giving him up was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do =/ My thoughts go out to you and the dog. I hope that everything works out for the best.

It's awful when you're dreading this day, and at the same time, it's for the best! I'm so sorry! but think of it this way! now he will "hopefully" go to someone with no other pets and never have to leave again. I'll be praying that's the case! and for you as well.

I called my husband and he said Blanco was picked up. He was happy to see his person from the shelter. I am going to continue looking for a forever home for him. I hate knowing I was just one more stop that he didn't get to keep.

And then I referred to Nala by the name of "Hocus" - our dog that died last summer. I haven't been this messed up since she died.

Jamiya,

I'm sorry you had to go thru all of that. You did the best you could, hopefully someone will take him that has no other pets you have to think of Nala and your cats they were there first.

Good Luck

Hi Jamiya,
I think everyone else already said it all.
I hope you feel better about this now it's been a couple of days.
I think it was Mikes post I said how sorry I was about it not working out for either of you... but when there are lives at steak you have to protect your family.

I had a greyhound for 3 hours once. I fell in love with him right away but the people boarding him kinda pushed me into taking him straight away. I phoned the "expert" who was meant to be dealing with the whole adoption and he got to my place within minutes of me getting home with Ralf (greyhound). It was a total nightmare. The dog was nothing how he'd been advertised and DIDN'T get along with cats. He went for the chase imediatly, even with 3 of us in the room watching every move.
The "expert" reasured me into letting him take him to rehome him somewhere suitable. He said his instincts were too strong and I'd probably have to live on edge in a divided house for aslong as I had both cats and dog.

That was comming from an expert who'd been rehoming for 27 years.

You could have tried to make it work for months and still have had to let him go. At least this way it was a short break away from kennel life for him for a while, and not a complete family life he was leaving behind.

Chin up

I'm so sorry, Jamiya. I have been thinking about your story for quite a while now seeings how I am dealing with putting two dogs together at the moment- I really feel for you. I'm sorry it didn't work out, but like previously said, it's for the best.

You sound like a great pet owner and you did what you had to do.

Thank you, everyone, for your support. Nala is back to her old crazy self. I took her to PetsMart yesterday to see how she acts with the other dogs. She was just as excited as ever to go visit them, although she seemed a little more hesitant with the bigger ones. I think she will be okay.

The Golden was adopted. It's probably for the better. I think I am just going to go back to trying to set up play dates and get Nala trained better. Perhaps down the road we will get a puppy, and I will bring the behaviorist with me to pick one out.

Thank you for all the kind words. I am going to call and check on Blanco today. He should be moving (again) to the woman who said she would foster him until he finds a home. I got a call about him on Saturday, but it didn't really sound promising.

Aww, well keep looking girl. He'll find a good home. HE's a cutie, but wasn't right for your home.

Don't worry, you've got Nala, and I'm sure she doesn't mind soaking up ALL the attention!!

Just remember, you gave him a happy time away from an awful shelter. WIth out you he wouldn't have had any of that time.
