My husband and I took in a beagle that showed up in our neighborhood as a stray. At that time we knew nothing about dogs and let her get in the habit of going to the bathroom on training pads in the garage. The past 2 months we've been trying to really potty train her. Unless she's with us we keep her leashed to the coffee table, or in the backyard on her tie out. Thing is the second she gets off either tie down she heads straight for the garage. She will literally hold it all day!! Just to wait and go to the garage. Mu husband and I are very busy and have a lot of trouble keeping a routine with her. I know this is really detrimental. Have you tried puting the pads outside when she is outside? Or slowly moving them in that direction until they are there? there was a very good topic on this awhile back called: my pomeranian puppy or something like that. I'll find it and move it to the top for you. I'm sure you'll get more answers as well from others. Susan IP: Logged |

Hi boy oh boy, well, first of all let me tell you that there is hope for this. Not only do I groom, but I foster for a rehoming service. About 6 months ago, the service called me to foster a collie mix....Cassie. The dog was returned to them because she "wouldn't be housebroke" I had some issues, but said I would give it a shot. Apparently she ruined a persian rug in the people's home and they were at their wits end. I got her here, had her outside...she did nothing, came in and headed straight to the dining room...go figure...and peed. Well, I caught her and brought her outside...she did nothing. I kept an eye on her and every time she went into the dining room, I brought her out. Apparently, the previous parents got her to go outside every so often and would praise her with "good girl". So, I figured the dog was confused...she was good girl for potty, good girl for shake, good girl for sit good girl for lay....so I tried "cassie go pee" when we went out...I had her completely house broke in 3 days and ended up keeping her myself. She is a great dog and I am glad I figured it out. Feel free to email me if you have anymore questions. Yes, if she reliably goes on the pads, then I would first put a command to it, like "go potty" or whatever you want to use. After a few days when you think she knows it, start moving the pads toward a door and then outside. You might have to do it really slowly and over a lot of time. The only other thing I can think of is to actually crate her. Don't bring her to the garage no matter what. Crate her and bring her outside often and give her a command to go potty. If she doesn't go in 5-10 minutes, bring her back in and crate her. Try again in half an hour. If she does go, praise her while she is going and give her a treat. She may hold it for a while, but eventually she will have to go. Once she goes outside once, it will be helpful since then it will have the "bathroom" smell. Bring her to the same place every time you take her out. And you need to go with her every time - don't just chuck her out the door. Stay with her so you can praise her if she goes. Moving the pads outside might help at the beginning as well. When I went out of town with Nala last weekend, she wouldn't go outside the hotel. I finally just put her in her crate for the night. She wouldn't go the first time I took her out in the morning, but by the second time she couldn't wait any longer and finally went. You have never seen a dog pee for so long.
