Ok, I'm needing to vent to my fellow doggie lovers here.....

I took the dogs out yesterday to town to get the mail, go to the feed store, ect....

I let them ride in the back because it was such pretty weather yesterday, and I thought they'd enjoy that alot more. Of course they were both harnessed into the bed of the truck, so they cant jump on the sides or out of the truck and whatnot...

Well they loved it. Smokey thought it was a new sport to lunge and bark at the passing cars...NOw, he NEVER chases cars, but I guess he thought he was "hot stuff" cuz he could go faster int he truck.....
Well that was ok, funny and he was doing no harm other than making us laugh so hard I almost wet my pants...

Well we made our stops and made an extra one to the county tax office. WE bought some property and needed to have it surveyed, ect...

WEll, this lady was sitting in her car and waited for me to come out to my truck and approached me and ranted that I'm a horrible person for letting my dogs ride in the back of the truck, tied in and its just awful. Then she wailes at me that the "dark dog" was growling at her when she approached him.

Ok. Heres what threw me. 1, why on earth would you approach a dog, tied safely in the back of the truck, growling at you?
2, what is wrong with them riding in the back, enjoying the beatiful day???? They were harnessed and attached to the "truck bed harnesses"...so they wouldn' fall out, jump out exc....
3. The dog did no harm. He was scared of the lady, and protecting his "woman" (CHarllotte) and the truck. Whats wrong with that? I do have a sticker on the back glass of my truck that came from the ACDCA. IT READS: "ACD, SECURITY"

Ijust think she was having a bad day, and needed to rant, that or she was upset the dogs didn't want to play with her.

Granted, they never bit her or showed teeth, and backed away from her....That should have been her first friggin clue to leave them alone and not approach!!
Then the comment that those dogs are awful, no one should have a dog like that! Its like the pit bull thing, A dog is the way it is from how it's raised!!!! My dogs have never intentionally bitten or growled. The one time Smokey bit, my mother in law was trying to get the new born puppies out of the box and move them, she kept pushing Smokey away from the bedroom door to get to them and he didn't bite her but put his mouth on her arm to show her he could. Of course he was repremended and such, but he was pushed and backed into a corner when trying to protect his "woman and babies". AAAHHHHH!! That just totally ruined a beatiful day!
Sorry so long, I just had to vent a little.

Hi, sorry to hear you had a bad day.

My husband and I adopted a puppy from the Humane Society, Mushka, who was the runt of the litter. She has very submissive characteristics and is quite shy at times. One day, when she was about 7-months old my husband and I took her up to the bagel shop. We were all enjoying our breakfast and a snooty woman approached. Mushka snuggled into me, away from the woman. Well to keep the story short, the woman accused us of beating our dog! The look on her face was disgust towards my husband and I as she walked off scowling. My husband and I were speechless from her comment jaws dropped open.
What did she say? She just accused us of beating our puppy!?!?!
Mushka is our little princess; we would never lay a hand on her. I am against violence towards animals, support PETA, and would never even think of buying a choke collar!

Some people are just rude!
Have a better day today, and kiss your doggies!

Oh my goodness! I have never had someone say anything like that to me! Of course, Ranger is only 8 months old. I am sure that I will get something like you did Samsintentions, because if someone approaches too fast, too loud, or if Ranger just doesn't like or hasn't met them, he HAS to stay between me and them, and he is loudly barking and growling at them the whole time. I don't think he would ever hurt anyone (normally once he sniffs them he is OK) but I have a feeling that if anyone were to ever try anything with me, Ranger would be on top of them before I could do anything about it!

I hope my story made you chuckle!
THANK YOU!
Mushka is a lovely mix breed, when we adopted her they told us she was a ‘German Shepard/Husky’; it was the blue light special breed of the day. Haha haha!
She has a body similar to a Greyhound, the color and markings of a Dingo, a mask like a Husky, soft fur like a Whippet, and a tail of a Shepard.
We call her a German Shepard, Husky, Greyhound, Whippet, Dingo! Or a baby deer.

Sam - I think the dogs are safer harnessed in a the back then running around like mine do in the front of the car. She was just being obnoxious. Smokey probably sensed that and was just saying leave me alone or showing protection. your post #3 was right on. I know if someone abrubtly approaches wylie she can do that or cower behind me. some people just dont have a clue.
you can vent all you want were are hear to lisen

Dogs are safe harnessed properly in the bed of a truck...and as it was pointed out..probably safer harnessed there than where that lady probably lets her pets ride...chances are loose in her car. She probably doesnt even have a switch to turn the airbags off in her car which can be fatal to pets. Anyways....shes dumb...I'm glad your dogs enjoyed the nice ride outside =) Dont listen to stupid people like that =)

We also have a rig set up so that we can harness the boys in the back of the truck, we bought the rigging at PetsMart. We have had several comments of a not so nice nature, I have patiently tried to explain the rigging and use of the harness rather than a collar and how it's safe. On top of that both of my boys wear Doggles to protect their eyes. We hardly ever ride this way really and usually it's been just Dooley, Witt has been scared of it so far, he only wants to ride in his kennel in the back.
After several verbal attacks last summer, I finally gave up on one couple and told them to mind their own f****** business, my husband just grinned,...but I felt bad anyhow. Both of my boys will protect my truck with a vengence and if I am in it...well, you all remember that I have been told not to return to a certain gas station...anyhow, I not only think thats natural, I am happy they do and if someone is stupid enough to appraoch my vehicle with two dogs barking at them in warning...I'm not feeling much sympathy. They will hush if I tell them, and I do if I am nearby. On one hand I am happy that society in general is becomming more conscious of "taking good care of our pets", thats a huge step forward, but I sure wish they would use some common sense in doing so.

This is how they normally ride, Witt in his crate and Dooley in harness to the rigging and both wearing Doggles.

Wow! They look like they are having fun! I think Ranger would have his off in a second too! (Although he does like wearing aprons over his back! Strange I know, but we tried it one day to see what he thought of having stuff back there, since when he stops growing he is getting a sweater!)

VENT AWAY!!!! we need that sometimes. She was just being "rude" sometimes it's hard to just ignore people likt that, if you're having a bad also they get an earful back.

I try to not go off on people, but sometimes "you just can't help yourself"

It amazes me that people think they have a right to tell you how to raise your pets, now if they were being hurt in some way, that would be different, but they just didn't like the lady (using that term loosly) she should have just backed off.

I would never approach an animal in someone's truck or car, most dogs are very protective, even little ones.

Don't let her get to you, this is her problem, not yours.

Susan

Oh I know I shouldn't let it get to me, but geez...its the ignorance that she showed!!! I mean, what if she would have persited to approach them and he bit her? Then what?

I swear...I could have smacked her yesterday.

Yeah I got my bed harness from Pets Mart also! ITs wonderful. I want a pair of DOggles!!! Char would wear them I;m sure. She LOVES to dress up. Smokey would have them off and in a million peices in a second though!

Dooley does take his off if he is not in the truck. It's a little deal we have, if he wants to ride in the truck he has to have them on. As soon as he gets down he paws at it or looks up at you wanting you to remove them. Because of the straps...if he does paw them off they just stay around his neck so they don't get lost. He will also keep them on if on leash. Witt will wear his all day, of course Dooley was two the first time he wore them and Witt was like 6 months old, so Witt was just a pup when they were introduced. We started by putting them on outside in the bright light and while on leash. We went for walks and whenever they tried to paw at them we would correct with a little tug on the leash saying "leave it", it took about two days and they were fine with it. Witt really didn't care from the start. We spend alot of time outside in the summer and it's just as important to protect their eyes from the sun as it is ours. If I had a dog with a white face...I would make them wear them always while outside in the sun. You might be surprised what they will adjust to, try it!

Last fall, I went to the grocery store to get a couple of things. Decided to take my Aussie with me. The temperature was around 45-50 degrees. I have a crate for my dog in the back of my Ford Escape. Since we do a lot of training/showing he has a bucket for water, etc. Since it was a sunny day, I had the sunroof open.

The grocery story happens to be a Whole Foods, which gets an interesting clientel.

Went into the store and left the sunroof open. Since the dog was in a crate, I could lock the doors.

Sure enough when I got out, there was someone waiting for me and proceeded to lecture me on leaving dogs unattended in cars in the sun. It took ALL of my composure to try to explain to this person that, despite their good intentions, if anything my dog might have been a little cool.

When I opened up the back of the vehicle, the individual saw that the dog had water. So much for that complaint.

After about 10 minutes of waiting for the police to show up, the individual decided to call the police and withdraw their complaint. Maybe they finally got some common sense.

Well intentioned, but . . .
