Errrr, I succumbed. I found a red merle aussie at the shelter who is mellow and loves to play. He and Nala hit it off. They cat tested him and he was fine. he knows sit, down, stay, come, beg, shake, leave it, and wait.

Now I need a name! Ideas?

He has been Blanco, Frosty, and Panama. He seems to answer to Blanco, but I can't stick with that...

Ugh. He is growling at Tesla (cat). /sigh

Oops! Pictures!

I don't think he looks as cute in photos - the flash washes him out. I will keep working on it. In the meantime...

OMG you brought him home! he is a cutie, he just has to get used to the cats, and comfy in his new home, I have never seen an aussie with the coloring. How old is he? I would see what his personality was after a few days. When we first had Wylie, we named her socks, after a week it was no way, Wylie she is, come to think of it your dog looks like a Wylie.

Glad to hear he is trained. my neighbors got a beautiful black lab from the shelter about a year and half old and it was completely trained and it is the best dog

He is beautiful! Have never seen one with that coloring though. HOw old is he? Hmmm....I can't think of any names! I think Simba or Mufasa could work, since it is lion king. If you get Aussies shaved right, they do look like odd-colored lions!

Eek! He has decided to chase the cats! Nooooooooo, I worked so hard to find a non-cat chaser. One of the dogs I looked at was actually scared of them, but she seemed totally unfocused and she had no manners or training at all. Arrrrgh!

Well, we will work on it. Maybe I should just break down and move the litterbox and cat food so they don't HAVE to go through this room if they don't want to. But the basement is such a nice place for them to be - roomy and comfy. Maybe I can get my husband to build a little tunnel for them to use.... *hysterical laughter*

He is almost 2 years old - they are guessing 1 year and 10 months. I guess I will go with April 1 for his birthday and May 15 for Nala's.

For names:
Simba
Kovu
Mufasa
Buddy
Tucker
Dylan
Oz

I also like Maisey's Finnegan. And Wylie. Wyatt is my sister's cat. I have a whole list of names at work where I jot them down when I think of one. I'll have to look through them tomorrow, assuming I don't play hookey so I can watch this guy.

I hope he goes in his crate okay tonight. He sure is beautiful, isn't he?!

You don't know the half of it, Mike! If I had married a like-minded person, we would probably live out in the country with a ton of dogs by now. And horses!

I think I need to feed these guys separately. I am starting the new guy on raw, cold turkey. He didn't eat his dinner very well, but he gobbled down breakfast this morning! And then he took a pork bone straight out of Nala's mouth. She let him, but I don't think we want that happening, LOL. Perhaps I will feed him in his crate for a while.

I had to sort of stuff him into his crate last night, but once he was in he was just fine.

I wonder if a female dog would have been less "physical" in her play. When we had a friend's dog come over, she and Nala just ran around the yard at high speed with sticks in their mouths. They had a great time!

Nala and this new guy do a lot more wrestling. I hope she convinces him to run around a bit, too!

Its like mitzy she has took it upon herself to bite my new dog to tell him she is the boss he dont like it because he wants to play and she just cant be bothered.

If he tried taking a bone from mitzy's mouth she would have took it straight back lol
Glad your dogs getting on so well its great when there is no fighting or agression.

My husband is too laid back to "flip a lid". But the way he is not sulking makes me think he is contemplating divorce or something...

I am getting the usual post-dog-acquisition jitters. I should have waited a day or two to pick him up, just so I didn't feel like I might have done an impulse thing. I am worried at how he is growling at the cats. Chasing is one thing, but agression is a totally different thing. I will have to keep an eye on him and see how he acts.

Otherwise, except for a little bit of resource guarding, he seems like a great guy. I'm sure we can get the resource thing settled down once he realizes that he is home and will always get fed and have toys.

But I am going to go meet the Golden. No, I am not getting three dogs. But the Golden will go fast and if this guy turns out to be aggressive towards the cats...

I think the type of playing a dog does is just an individual thing, and depends on how they observed play or how they were played with as puppies. Cameron, for example, is a VERY physical player, and she is female. She loves to wrestle and roll around when she plays, and she got so frustrated last week when I was over at my friends house who has a male yorky- they got along fine, but the Yorky's idea of playing was running around chasing eachother, and Cameron just wanted to tackle or be tackled-- several times she would get on her back in front of him, just inviting him to wrestle, but he didn't want any part of it! It was hilarious to watch. Anyway, I think it does just depend on the dog- you could get a female who would be like Cameron and would play just as aggressively. Your best bet would be to try to observe it in action with other dogs, if possible, to see how it interacts.

Hi again Jamiya, So he's not crazy about the cats huh! didn't you say you had that same problem with nala at first? and how did you get him to settle down with them? or did he??

The only time I've had a cat and dog at the same time was when my husband had an english bull dog (his favorite breed) but much too expensive! he died of old age. Anyway he loved the cat! my cat slept on his back, it was the cutest thing! somebody stole that cat of mine, he was a silver tip persian/siamese, very pretty! way off topic! sorry!!

Your dog may have been an impulse buy, but I can see why you wanted him so badly! Is his coat as soft as it looks? I hope he calms down with the cats so you can keep him. So hubbies not too happy huh? I'm sure he'll fall in love, and that will be that! Good luck with the new boy, and keep us posted.

Sincerely, Susan

My husband is far too practical and un-emotional to make falling in love with him mean he's glad we have him. Don't get me wrong - he's a good man. Just different and not an animal person like I am.

Yes Susan, we have the same problem with Nala and cat chasing. We have not been able to stop her, yet, although we have made a very tiny amount of progress....sometimes. I was hoping more control would come with age and more work on it.

The new guy is almost 2 so he should have more control than Nala. I will try to work with him and see what I can do about it. It almost looked like if I could get him to come away from the cat and gave him effusive praise ofr it, Nala would start to come over, too. She didn't really want to leave the cat, but she wanted to know why he was getting so much attention. If I can call him off the cat, then, it may help both of them. But every time he chases them he gets harder to call off. I'm working on it.

And the growls bother me. Nala chases, but I have never feared for the cats' safety. If he becomes unsafe around them then I have some thinking to do. I cannot allow my cats' safety to be compromised.

And I also won't allow him to bully Nala. If that becomes he method of interacting with her and a behaviorist can't help - again, it will be decision time. He may just be better off as an only dog with no cats - but of course he needs a chance to settle down first and learn our rules.

I like Kovu, too.

More names (some repeats):
Freckles
Dylan
Finnegan
Shane
Rusty
Angus
Fergus
Broughan
Brody
Tucker
Beckett
Micah
Loki
Buddy
Wylie
Merlin
MacIntosh (Mac)
Kovu

LOL...the more I look at him the more I like Flynn or Finn. I also liked Beckett..call him Beck for short.

Jimaya, I hope you cooked your husband one hell of a dinner last night, ran him a bath and sucked up with compliments. Shawn just keeps shaking his head "no" at me everytime I show him a picture of a Catahoula puppy.

Keep in mind that FLYNN (heh) even though he is two...if nobody has ever taught him to not chase the cats...he isn't going to know the rules no matter how old he is. Also if Nala is doing it does he jump in? My two are worse when together...it's a pack thing.

Yes, they both went after poor Tesla last night. I think I am going to work on him hard this evening. I don't want it to become a habit, as it is with Nala. Also, I think I might have better luck with him than with Nala (obviously we haven't had much luck so far) and I am hoping I can use him to model good behavior for her.

Yesterday three books came in the mail - "The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller, and two Ian Dunbar books - "Good Little Dog Book" and "How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks". I am reading the positive training one right now and I skimmed a few sections of the others last night. The Dunbar books were using "off" to mean "stop touching or doing whatever you are doing now" - and therefore it would be the command used to make the dogs stop chasing the cats. I have been using "Leave It" to mean the same thing, so I will stick with that. But I started working on it more vigorously last night. I used treats and would put them on the floor in front of each dog and tell them to "Leave It" and then "Take It" when they could have it.

The new guy already knows "Leave It" so he was pretty good at it. I swear Nala was watching him and she got good pretty fast. Neither one really grasps the "Take It" part but that's okay for now.

I am going to work more on the "Leave It" this afternoon and then try what someone on another board talked about - walking toward the cat with the dog on leash and then giving the "Leave It" command and walking the other way. It's too bad he doesn't know "Heel".

I'd like to put my vote in for Finn or Flynn as well- he just looks like a Finn or Flynn- don't know why My husband and I were actually just talking last night about getting a cat- we have thought about another dog but I'm afraid it will be double trouble instead of a positive influence on our family-- a cat would be much easier to handle but from your stories on cat chasing I don't even know if I want to go there with Cameron! I just have this feeling that she would harass a cat to no end....

P.S. Even though I always talk about my fears about getting another dog, I know that one day I will just go to the shelter and bring one home- just like you Jamiya- my husband too is of the practical variety..It was like pulling teeth to get him to agree to taking in Cameron- I had to beg and beg literally!! He loves her to death now though. I am actually working with a local humane society right now through my graduate program and writing a grant for them, which means I will be spending lots of time at the humane society....not a good thing. I know I won't be able to handle it and I will end up bringing one home!!!
