Hello All, I was just at my vet re-booking Abbey's spay appointment, and I mentioned that Abbey has had a bit of dry skin, and she is scratching quite a bit. They said it's the time of year, yada yada yada, and that I shold use this pill or liquid stuff called "Vet Solutions", it is some kind of Omega 3 oil, based from fish oil. Thanks! ------------------ IP: Logged |

No, not of that brand, but those extra oils are supposed to do good for the coat and skin. IP: Logged |

Essential oils are, well, essential for good skin and coat. If they don't get it in their diets then supplementing can make a great difference. LA, and GLA are omega 6 oils found in (LA)- sun/safflower oil, (GLA)Borage/primrose oil. For omega 3 oils you'll need EPA and DHA which are in fish oil and ALA in flax or soy. These oils need to be used together in order to be converted (except LA). Premium dog foods will include most of these, however not usually fish oils and most vets will quadrupple the dosage for several weeks. It will take several weeks ro see a difference. IP: Logged |

Just looked up the brand online and found this: quote: Sounds like an excellent food brand so that most likely isnt the problem unless the dog has some type of allergy to a particular ingredient. You should have your vet run an allergy test to see. Ive seen the printed up reports and it will list maybe 50 allergies and your pets amount of allergy to each one on a scale of 1 to 5. If i remember correcly the tests had to be sent out to a lab that sent back those results. Was rather interesting to see all the different plants and stuff on the list and how allergic some dogs were to each. Anyways....thats just if you dont see any signs of improvement in the next few weeks with what the vet mentioned. Where do you buy that brand and what is the approximate price/pound by the way? I have a good brand I use as well but its only sold at a west coast and new york centered grocery store so I'm always on the lookout for others when I move later this year. IP: Logged |

Cindylou, the above post could be right about allergies. Many vets will suggest essential oils to help fight allergies and the dry skin and itching that come with it. All the oils I mentioned can be found in any store that has a health section. The best one my clients use is "flax, fish, Borage" and is made by several different companies. They come as liquid gels and are squeezed onto the dog's food. I've seen great improvement in all of them as far as their dry skin and coat condition. IP: Logged |
