When I get older I want to have a dog. I don't know what breed yet. I don't have a size perference or coat perference. I want something that with defend the house but will not be one of those little yippy dogs that bark at everything. I want it to be good with childern, other dogs (so I can keep two), and other animals (like cats). I would be nice if it was not independent enough to not be afarid when I leave, but not so indepent that he's very hard to train.

It's very fun to research the different breeds and see whats out there. I come across breeds I have never heard of all the time, I love to read about them. There are many breeds I think are cool but know don't fit my personality, or wouldn't be a good fit for me and my family. I love Great Danes, but their life span is so short I just know I couldn't have one. Luckily my Aunt has several so I get to love 'em up when I want. I researched dogs for quite a long time before deciding I wanted a dog from the herding category. My husband has an Aussie/lab X and I have a Catahoula X. It really pays to spend the time finding the right type of dog for yourself, it's good you are thinking about it now.
Smiles on you, Maisey

yes I agree. Research is the key. I've been thinking about this all my life and researching different dog breeds for the last 5 years. However, I still cannnot make up my mind. It seems as though my mind changes from about different breeds. I know that alot of the breeds I like don't fit me and these are the ones I can't get out of my head.
Welsh springer spaniel
Italian greyhound
Greyhound
chihuahua-long hair
bernese mountain dog
Irish wolfhound
scottish deerhound
welsh corgis
chinese crested
schipperke
border terrier
french bulldog
poodle-any type
whippet
rough collie
german shepherd
newfoundlandmaremma sheepdog
tibetan mastiff
swiss hound
Greater swiss mountain dog

Well you have quite a mix going there! Maybe it would help narrow it down if you decided what it is you want to do with the dog. Some of those breeds you mentioned would be great for carting. Are you interested in dog sports? or do you just want a house dog? Do you have a job in mind for this dog?
You can also look at the health issues each breed has, temperment descriptions and I know you said you didn't care..but grooming is a deciding factor for me. I want a "wash and wear" dog for sure! I have a Poodle, I didn't choose him, he kinda chose us...I learned quickly what a pain in the hiney his grooming needs are. My other two dogs are super easy, Witt, my Catahoula X pup has a single coat, it keeps itself very neat and tidy. I definately appreciate that.
The larger breeds you mentioned like the Irish Wolfhound also have shorter life spans if that matters to you. Dogs with tons of lip, slobber and drool alot, something to think about. Some you listed were herding type breeds and they have needs all their own, they are smart and think on their own, which can present challenges. Consider energy levels and what best suits what you have in the way of time to offer a dog with high energy. Just some ideas to help you whittle that list down.

Here is a sort of related question....what is that dog that looks like a Saluki but with much less hair? It has fuzzy ears and a fuzzy long skinny tail..but its short haired. Same general shape tho...not a borzoi....I saw them on a dog show and thought they were beautiful. With my luck they are rare and expensive and full of health problems or something =P

The life span doesn't bother me, neither does the coat or drool. The biggest problem I have is that I don't know yet what I'd be doing with the dog. In terms of activities. It's so far away yet too try to determine. I still have to go to college for 4-8 years then settle down into a house and dicide. Heck, I don't even know if I'll stay in this state after college or not at this point. That would make a differece as well because of the coat type. If I stay here I won't be able to get the hairless chinese crested because of the winters. I guess I'm getting to too ahead of myself.

Maisey, I hear ya on the grooming thing. I recently watched my parents shit zu for 2 weeks and I thought I would never get a dog like this, even though they dont shed, she easlily got mats so had to be brushed all of the time and then her eyes are those type that weep a lot, that require a lot of cleaning I would much rather clean Jakes and wyllies hair off of furniture and floors

Honeybear, I have a shi tzu, that's what Freebie is. I do know what you mean about the coat, he is alot of work! But worth it to me, couldn't live without him! and his eyes don't tear up, I'm happy about that.
