Hi my name is Kathy. Two days ago I had to put down my little boy named Spookie. He had contracted Parvo Virus. A normal dogs white count is from 4000 to 6000, Spookie had one of only 300 and wasn't producing any more. We put him down as our vet said there was no help and that he was suffering now. We did what we thought best and had him put down. He caught the Virus from a dog I brought back from Mexico. This dog from Mexico shows no signs of the Parvo Virus, the vet said he was a carrier. Does that mean that I can't take my dog anywhere for fear that I might infect another dog? How can my dog carry the Virus and not show it?Contact at warkathryn@yahoo.ca

Is the dog updated on his shots? Yes if he is a carrier than you should not bring him anywhere. Especially around any puppies. The virus is highly contagious. I'm not a vet or anything but I know a lot about this subject. I lost a puppy to parvo as well. She had 2 sets of shots but i was late on her 3rd because she was sick and they didn't want to give her her vaccine until she was healthy. Then when I started noticing her vomit and having diarrea I called and they said she probably got into somthing that didn't agree with her....said nothing about parvo. So it was also too late for our little girl. An adult dog can "carry" parvo and not show any symptoms. I hope this helps a little....I'm sorry for your loss!

I remember this question being asked once before here, and I remember there was a disagreement about the answer. Unfortunately I don't remember what the outcome was. However if you go to the bottom of this page and look to the right you will see where it says "HOP TO" and you can choose where on the site you want to go and then hit "go". You need to ask your vet about the dog being a carrier and if other dogs should be exposed to him. They should be able to answer you in a simple phone conversation.

The big thing here is that you now have the virus in your home, car, yard etc. Anywhere that pup was is a potential hazard. You may have tracked it on your shoes and hands where you went as well. Read the information on clean up carefully.

I'm sorry about your puppy, it's such a devastating virus and I can't imagine how hard it was to make the decision you had to make. I have read about the dogs in Mexico, it's very very sad, Kudos to you for bringing one home to care for.

The bottom of your shoes can carry Parvo...it is easily transmitted to other animals. Do the cleaning...and to be safe..just keep the dog away from other dogs and public areas for a good long time.
