Hi I am new to this site. 7 week old puppy was diagnosed with Parvo on Wednesday. The vet told me I could treat him at home with an IV and medication. My Chester wont eat, drink or play. I am really praying that he will make it. Has anyone treated a puppy with Parvo at home? What should I expect? Please help, I truly feel helpless. IP: Logged |

Hi,I am so sorry to hear about your littel fella, The main thing at the moment is to get plenty of fluid back into his body aswell as antibiotics the sooner these are admistered the better the chances are. I have never heard of treatment being done at home as the antibiotics needs to be administered through the IV if this si the case the vet will show you how to change the bags he will talk you through thr whole procedure. Chicken broth or liquidized chicken can be tried to see if he will eat that. Mike. IP: Logged |

Hi! I treated my dog at home but not with an I.V., I used a turkey baster and forced pedealite down him every two hours, even at night. I did this for two days, then I gave him baby food and baby cereal, this I had to force also at first. The main thing is what Mike said about liquids, they have to stay hydrated! Parvo is a scary thing, but you must be persistant. Not all dogs will pull through, it's worse for small dogs and puppies, but that doesn't mean you can't beat it! please keep us posted on his progress. You're in my prayers, Susan IP: Logged |

Aww I'm sorry, poor little guy. I've never heard of treating them at home either. Hopefully he'll pull through. Definatley keep him hydrated. His body is getting lots of fluids through his IV, but you can also help encourage him to drink water on his own, Use ice chips and place them in his mouth until they melt. You can also buy some canned dog food and put that on his tounge as well. He'll try and spit it out but the added nutrients and fats will help him out alot. GOod luck. ITs going to be tough. Hope everything turns out ok. IP: Logged |

Thanx for your replies. They are very encouraging. I have been forcing him to eat the pedyalite and the have given him chicken broth. Today I have noticed that his stool did not show blood, but is is still very runny. Thanx again and please keep Chester in your prayers! IP: Logged |
