We have tried several different things with Nala in the car. She and I are going on a trip this weekend for a seminar - about a 4-5 hour drive. We used to always put her in a crate, but not her usual crate. Her "car crate" is a smaller, plastic crate than the one she sleeps in (which is wire). It is plenty big enough to lie down in, but it's getting a little cramped for her now. I don't want to use that one for a trip this long. So, I can probably fit her regular crate in the car if I put the seat down (which I can do since the kids will not be with me). I have a hatchback. I want her crate with me anyway for the two nights in the motel, but I will have to collapse it to carry it by myself (36" wire crate). The other thing we have done is to use a harness and seatbelt. She sits very nicely next to me up front, but I always get the idea she is not very comfortable (even though I LOVE to have her with me - makes me feel less lonely while driving). She is not really a dog that sits a lot. She either stands, runs, or lies down. She can still lie down on the passenger seat, but she has to curl up to do it and I think the seatbelt makes it tricky for her as well. Also, the radio is louder up front and I worry that it bothers her (naturally I keep it at a reasonable volume). I also just bought a barrier for the back of my car, and we rode with her to visit doggies in the shelter with her just loose in the hatchback. Do you think this is unsafe? I will probably rotate her while we drive - getting out to let her go potty and then putting her in a different place when we get back in the car. Do you think any of those things sound more safe or less safe? Also, has anyone personally noticed soothing music having a relaxing effect on their dog?

LOL Jimiya, we kepp our radio on a lotot the TV when we leave like if we are going out to dinner and running errands, my husband thinks it makes them feel better. I always wondered how those seat belts work, they dont sound comfortable at all. they say crating is the safest. We have the barrier and both Jake and Wylie stay in the back I have an SUV so I fold down the seats and the barrier is rihgt behind me. Ihave to use it bacuase Jake isa hazard to my driving, he wants to lay on your lap! And can see how big he is. Honeybear IP: Logged |

I leave the radio on if she is being left at an odd time. There is no TV in the bedroom with her crate. She and I used to watch Animal Planet in the mornings when she was a little puppy. I would like to leave her crated in the family room while we are at work, with Animal Planet on, but I have always been afraid she would go nuts and hurt herself if the cats decided to tease her.

I try to make the boys watch the National Geographic Channel show "Dogs with Jobs" every afternoon but they ignore it. Guess the thought of actually working for a living is beyond their comprehension. IP: Logged |

Hi, 1 Of my bitches mitzy that i take everywhere with me when out in the car just jumps straight into the back seat and lays straight down she sits up every now and again to look out the window, I have tried her with a harness and seatbelt but she whines alot as she must not like it so i just let her sit there freely. I always have a tv or radio on in the house as the dogs seem to love it i think it must be abit confusing for them at times as they can hear the voices but wonder where the people are that are talking lol mike IP: Logged |

Dukesdad, I don't think dogs are that stupid. They comprehend the working dogs just fine and are simply choosing to ignore it and feign ignorance for you. Mike, I like the idea of letting Nala roam in the hatch with her comfy bed and toys, but if I get into an accident do you think that would be more harmful to her than being in a crate? And I saw a poster on the hairdresser's door from people whose dog got scared and ran off when they had an accident and they were still looking for her. I have thought about somehow stuffing the floor on the passenger side in front with things to make it the same height as the seat so she has more room to lie down. But I don't know if the seatbelt would still be uncomfortable for her.

I put a dog bed in the back of my hatchback for Luna and she usually just lies down while I'm driving. When I first put her in, she'll stay sitting up until I get into the driver's seat and then she lays down. I've wondered about whether it is ok for her if I get in an accident. When I have to take her crate with me, I have to fold down the back seats so then she rides in the passenger seat with a harness and seatbelt. She just curls up on the seat and looks plenty comfy. I'm not sure what would be best for your trip. Maybe beside you but stop often to let her out to stretch. Or swap around between stops to see if she has a preference. IP: Logged |

4-5 hour car trip eh? I see OPPORTUNITY! Perfect time to work on sit and stay. Dooley thinks he has to stand on the bench seat in the truck and press his nose to the window, which drives me crazy and I don't think it's a safe place for him to be. The more they ride in the car and the more consistent you are about sit..the better they are. I know you will think this is terrible of me to do..but when Dooley is pressing his nose against the window and ignores my sit command I tap the brake so he bonks his nose...he will immediately sit down and give me this look like "sheesh mom!" Hi Jamiya, Sounds like a fun trip with the exception of 5 HOURS!!! just a little humor, I hate long drives because of disc problems in my neck. I think the idea of him being in the back by the hatch might be o.k. if you stacked a bunch of blankets against that back window. If I'm mistaken, they have large windows in the back, is that right? that would be my only concern if you had a wreck (which you're not) and that window broke. Maybe you could do both! have him sit with you a while in front, then put him in the back to lie down a bit. Is this trip business or pleasure? is it just you and Nala? and the music, Casey loves it as long as it's not hard rock or something like that. Not a chance with me though, it's classical or soft Christian music. You gotta sing!!! or what else can you do to pass the long hours.... Have fun! and be safe!!! Susan IP: Logged |

I know with Wylie, she is very active dog like Nala and she has to see out, I mean look out the front window, she will sit sometimes for more than an hour before she gets too tired and has to lay down. she doesnt run around in the car but she does like to try to bite the passing cars. Hi Jamiya, I think I would do the same as what you're thinking and alternate. Try the harness up front with you for a while and then the barrier - at least the barrier will contain her to one area where she can comfortably lay. Good luck on your trip is it a dog related seminar?! IP: Logged |
