I switched both the puppy & Samantha to California Natural. I did it gradually. They have been on it now for approx 2 wks. They are doing great on it except now both of them are having formed, but a tad mushy, green poops. I don't know if green poops mean anything??? Anyways, I have been switching Samantha's food a lot lately (this is the third food in about 2 mos.). The other foods she was having bad diarrhea. I guess the green poop is not ideal but I hate to switch her again. I switched the puppy cause he was having hot spots and now he has green poop too. How long should I give the Calif. Natural before trying something else? Like, should I let them have green poop for a month and see if it clears, or should I already know this food isn't working? Second, I know everyone here really favors super premium foods and raw feeding. However, Samantha went from grocery store food to this super premium stuff and now her system is all screwy. When I'd switch brands of grocery stuff, I never had any problems. Now this new stuff is giving her all these poop problems. Like I said, I have tried 3 premium brands with her. Do you think maybe she is just not a premium food dog? Is there such a thing? Maybe after 6 yrs of feeding grocery store food, do you think that she will just never be able to adequately handle the super premium stuff? I have been thinking about maybe trying her with Nutro if I decide to change from Calif Natural. I guess it is sort of middle of the road. I know my questions all have the same theme but I'm sort of at a loss as to what to do and these things keep me up at night. IP: Logged |

I believe that I have heard before that it takes a dog about a month for every year they ate poor food to detoxify their systems. So if Samantha was on grocery store food for 6 years, it may take up to 6 months for her system to clear out the gunk. Unless this food is causing some sort of major problem, I would go with the green poops and keep feeding it. After about 3 months if it still isn't working out, then give something else a try. While all dogs are different and they do better on different foods, I think ALL dogs benefit from a more appropriate diet. I can't back that up with any proof, but I would think feeding a premium brand would ALWAYS be better than a grocery store brand. That being said, there are tons of premium brands and no one brand is right for every dog. Give your food a chance and then re-evaluate later.

I agree with Jimiya and give it more time. My holistic vet did tell me that for every year your pet is it takes a month to detoxify, as Jimiya said. I have changed Jakes food about 5 times in the last 2 months. luckily he hasnt had any poo and digestive problems. good luck honeybear IP: Logged |

Thanks for the replies. I think I will wait a good while. Like I said, other than the green poop, she is doing great. Her coat is so soft and shiny. Her energy has picked up too. Now that I know what is in the grocery store food, it kind of makes me sick to think about going back to it. IP: Logged |
