Hello i need some advice everytime someone comes to my door we have to be really carefull cuz the Yorkies run out and down the street and we have to chase them all over the neighbor hood. My kids, their friends and I are all used to it and they have not gotten out in awhile. Problem is my mother has became very ill and has to move in with me a nurse will be coming by to see her 3-4 times a week (different ladies) how can i stop the dogs from running out my mom cant chase them and who knows what the nurse's would do. Most of my neighbors know they are my dogs and would bring them home or keep them till me or the kids got home but they might get hit by a car or something.

thanks in advance
Rene

Hi! I know what you mean! Freebie used to do that all the time, but after being scolded a few times he has now stopped. But he did find his way out the back yersterday.

The only thing I can think of for you is to put up a baby gate in one of your rooms or crate them. Have they had obediance training at all? that might be something to look into to if you can afford it. I'm sure someone here will give you some good ideas. Good luck! and sorry to hear about your mother.

Put them on a leash when the doorbell rings. Or have them dragging leashes at all times.

Teach them to "sit" when a person walks in the house - perhaps have the person coming in give them a treat for sitting. By then, the door wll be closed. You will need to work with them first so that they start to associate the doorbell with sitting and getting a treat. Get some people to help you practice by coming over (like your children or neighbors or a friend).

If this is not feasible, then how about resticting their access to the room with the door, using a baby gate?

The best thing to do is to work with them on their recall ("come"). Then if they do get out, you can call them back. It takes a lot of time and patience to train a dog to come reliably when they would rather be doing something else. (I need to work on this with my dog....sigh.)

They have not had training by a profesional only me. They are sure wild little things when the doorbell rings but we are working on it. I thought about keeping leash's on them but will the nurse grab them?? you guys gave me some great ideas tho thank you very much. I have tried the baby gates the wild little things just jump over it. Nala was much easier to train she is a very melo great dog. Sebastain and Jasmine are still babies 1 1/2 and 1 year hopefully they will loose some of there energy once they get a little older

YOu know, some friends of ours got a dog whistle for their dog, as she would often get out and go play with Snickers (Ranger's sister, who lives down the street from them), and nothing could get her back! They got her trained with the whistle, giving her her favorite treat as soon as she came back. Now nothing can keep her away when the whistle blows! Snickers has it down too now, and Ranger is getting there, still having a little trouble outside. And if you have a treat and he knows, he becomes velcro dog! I hope you get something figured out!

Since you won't be home during the day, I would get different baby gates, you can get them much taller, even pet stores have them. An X-pen may be an idea as well. Either way I would block them into a room or close them into a room. Crating is also an option. Anything but risking them getting out when you aren't there to collect them, it's just so dangerous.
I would still make a plan on how to alter their behavior when someone comes to the door and then practice it when you are home, be consistent and patient, but make sure they are proofed on it before you trust them to behave when you aren't there.

I love the dog whistle idea. A clear signal used only for "Come" with a really yummy treat on the other end. I might give this a try!
