hi- i have a two week old puppy (minpin) who is the runt of the litter, well up to today has been nursing well and growing- i came home tonight and she was crying and still is. she stays in the whelping box all day-i looked at her and one eye is completely closed. she has nursed a little and has eaten the honey i gave her- but she is still crying- should i take her to the vet and is there anything he can do for her?? It wouldn't hurt to take her to the vet. At two weeks old, thats very young to have her/him away from their parents. Take this little pup to the vet and get the vet to check him/her over. Jody IP: Logged |

Hi Why are you feeding a 2week old puppy honey. Did the mother reject this is puppy? If The mother has rejected this pup then it should be on a special substitute formula made especially for bottle feeding. Honey or apple juice is only meant to be given to rejected chicks. At 2wweks old if hand feeding the pup should be fed every 2-3 hours and the formula needs to be heated to body temprature, You will also need to use some cotton wool balls or cloth and soak in warm water sqeeze out the excess water and wipe the puppys bum and genitals to stimulate it to go to the toilet failer to do this can result in a very sick and weak puppy. Puppys are like babies and need to be treat like babies they need your help if the mother can not or will not look after them. Try the formula which can be bought from any petstore or vets surgery and see how he/she goes after feeding and going to the toilet give it a couple of hours if she is still crying take her to the vets to have her checked out. I dont mean to be blunt but this is what is meant by not being prepared for things to go wrong when puppies are born. mike. IP: Logged |

thanks to all who replied to my post- i took TWO of the pups to the vet this morningand they both had an infection in their eye. the vet treated with a cream and light antibiotics for the entire litter- this happened so fast- i have always kept their box clean and dry-about the honey i read somewhere online that honey may help so i gave her just enough to taste. about me not knowing what to do when things go wrong- well all i can say is that this is my first litter and i read and studied about the birth and what should happen the following weeks- i was prepared if they didnt nurse or drink for some reason- so how could i be prepared for this until it actually happened and i could read about how to treat it online-which i couldnt find anything relating to 2 week old puppies eyes so i took them to the vet as soon as they opened this morning. i am inexperienced in breeding but i have been very thorough with what i have learned. thanks IP: Logged |
