I recently had to give up my dogs. Part lab/chow mix, and a little mutt, they were just too big for my new apartment (to big to sneak around atleast, as the landlord doesn't allow pets). I took them to the a foster home about four hours away as it was the only one I could find to accept them. Most in town will only take in abused animals in as foster pets and I wasn't about to hand them over to possible euthanization.
I raised them from 6 weeks to 18 months. They were both very affectionate dogs although we were somewhat hermit-like in our patterns and as far as interaction with other dogs, they were mostly unsocialized. They were both very attached to me and although one seemed more independant when I went to leave them, the other was very clingy and seemed overwhelmed by the experience. He kept hiding behind me and looking to me for hugs, assurance, and security.
My question is for the experienced foster care people out there. What are my dogs likely going through right now? As I said they were not very socialized and there were a ton of animals at the foster care home. While I was there, they sniffed about and got aquainted with the other dogs. They were behaving unexpectedly well and seemed to get along with all the other animals (even the cats). The lady who took them assures me that they are distracted enough witht he environment that although they are grieving, they are ok. However the first night she also said neither ate. I was already concerned about this as neither would usually eat when i was away, even if it was their feeding time.
It's been over a week since i left them. I'm sure the independant one is doing ok, but I worry about the other one. He was always more affectionate and seemed more dependant on me for security. Needless to say I miss them a lot, but I dunno what this might be like for them or how long it could take them to get over it or if they'll really get over it at all. So what do you guys think?
Sorry for the long post but thanks...

I'm so sorry you had to give up your friends. You did the right thing, leaving them in such a loving place.

Can you call her and ask how they are doing? I'm sure she wouldn't mind.

I'm afraid I have never fostered dogs (yet) so I can't speak to the "usual" experience.

Call her, to ease your mind.

I too am sorry for your loss! but am happy that you did all you could to insure that they will eventually go to good homes. Like Jamiya said, give the lady a call to check up on them, that should help you rest a little easier. I can just imagine what you're going through...Sad...take care, Susan
