Hello all. I have had dogs my entire life of almost 28 years. I purchased two Great Dane sisters. I have had about 7 danes in my life. Now one of the pups has done very well with training. She is very loving and does well in the house so far. Now for the other up I can seem to get her to learn to go outside. She will pee and poop in the house and in her kennel. My dogs are let outside about 4 to 5 times a day for about 30 minutes. My other dogs are fine. This pup just will not learn to do it outside. She will be outside and be in the house for no more then 20 mintues and pee or poop all over. I have never had a pup or dog with this problem before. I have owned at aleast 6 different breeds in my life(my mother was a breeder and she showed dogs).
My pups are about 4 months now and my one is just about housetrained she somtimes will have accidents overnight if I dont let her out at the same time everyday. She never goes in the house and lets me know when she does have to go. I have even tried to let the other pup out at like every two hours and it still does not work.
Advice please.
Thanks

I know what you are going through with housetraining issues. My puppy, Indiana, is a slow learner. He is getting better though. I think it is just starting to click with him now at 4 mos. 4-5 times a day going out may not be enough. I have to let Indiana out every hour when he is in the house; then when I take him out, I walk around the yard with him until he goes. Then we come back in and he is good to go another hour. Also, while the dog is in the house, make sure you are always watching her. When Indiana does have an accident, I immediately put him out.
I know it is frustrating having another dog who gets it. My older dog, Samantha, is 6 yrs now. I think she went in the house once. I yelled at her and she never did it again. Her bladder is amazing. She can hold it for days if she wants too.

Never shout at a puppy or dog when they do something wrong they associate shouting with anger and they become scared of you.

When you take your pup outside use a simple command like go toilet or go potty when he does go praise him lots and give a treat the pup will then associate praise and treats with doing good things.

When the pup has an accident in the house what i do is have a spray bottle and when i see one of the going to do there business indoors i squirt them from behind and the stop what they were going to do.
Also let the puppys out on waking after feed times and play times also 10mins before you goto bed.

I breed dogs and i have only had a couple of accidents while house training my pups before they goto there new homes.

I never crate my dogs and i never shout at them i tell them no or naughty in a firm voice but never shout.

I let my dogs out in the backyard to go pee. Mabye I will try the walking with leash and spray bottle method. My other pup will go to the door I let them out at when she has to go. My 2 year old will also hold it for days. She has had two accidents in her kennel but will not go in the house. I know that she had the spray bottle method on her cause I use cologne spray and she used to freak when I would spray her with it. But if that is what I have to do then I will do it. I dont yell or shout at my dogs as Danes are quite bit huge babies and they will scream back at you if you yell at them. I did once and never will again. I will see if walking her helps with the spray bottle.
Thanks everyone!!

I never used a squirt bottle - I just clapped my hands and said "No!" to interrupt Nala if she was about to pee on the floor and then hustled her outside.

I think it is very important that you go outside with the dog. How do you know she has gone if you don't go with her? And you need to praise her as she is going - not too excitedly or she will stop, but the praise has to come right when she is peeing. Bring treats out and give her treats as well. That way she knows that peeing outside is what you want and good things happen to her because of it.

I also put a command to it - "go potty" - so that I can use it when we are out somewhere unfamiliar to let her know it is okay to go.

I agree with both Jamiya and Mike, but I wouldn't use a cologne spray on them because it might accidently get in thier eyes. Sounds like you have a very stubborn pup! thier are alot of them out there, mine was one of them. But she's older now and does fine. Good luck to you! Susan

I already do the clap and very firm no she does not listen. I am not new to training of dogs. I have shown dogs since I was 14 and have also done obidence and agility.
I have raised pups from newborn till death before. I know how to train a pup in the house and everything else.
She has not taken to anything and I am at my wits end. I am going to try the spray bottle because I have tried everything else, and NO I dont plan on using colgone to spray on her to train her. I am not dumb. I use cologne after they get a bath because it has a motisureizer in it.

I'm sorry! I must have missunderstood you on the cologne spray, i thought you meant you sprayed him with it when he was bad. Anyway, no biggie! no one is saying you don't know anything about raising dogs, I don't think I said you didn't. Good luck! with the pup.

I might b new to this forum but I'll give it a shot.
...CHILL OUT...
I had a golden and she was the same way. She drove to the point of no return. I also have a black lab and he loves everything and couldn't take much of her. I ended up giving her to an old couple that owned a farm and regret it everyday. I feel like I let her down and I miss her. So chill out and step back. Just try to remember when you raised the other ones, none of them are the same. Good luck.

Sadly enough some dogs just aren't meant to be indoor animals. A puppy should be able to hold his bathroom needs one hour for every month he is in age. you may want to check with your vet and make sure it isnt a medical problem causing his problem. If he is in a very large crate you may need to switch to a smaller crate. Healthy dogs usually will not go to the bathroom where they have to sleep, just as most wild animals won't use the bathroom in their dens. You do have to watch a puppy just as you would a small child though. If they are left unattended even for a few minutes they will most certainly cause trouble. If the behavior continues you may have to consider a large outside pen or fenced yard for him whenever you don't have the time to monitor him. I had a German Shep with the same problem and no matter what we did he insisted on using the bathroom all the time even at night. We changed his feeding schedule so that he would not eat for at least 6 hours before we went to bed and took him out directly before we went to bed and he would still go in the crate at night at 7 months old. Being that we have five children and both work we didn't have the time for a dog that required so much supervisionand let him go live with my mother who is retired and has a huge fenced yard. He is now perfectly content to not use the bathroom in his crate at night inside as long as he is outside all day. The vet told us he may have had "nervous energy" similar to ADD in humans and when he would get frustrated or excited he would go to the bathroom whereever he felt like going. I agree with whoever mentioned it above though, yelling at or smacking a dog only either makes them afraid or makes them aggressive. I have a friend who broke his dog of going to the bathroom inside by using a shock collar which personally I don't agree with but it did work for him. I would definately take him to the vet and rule out any medical problems before I even tried anything else.
