We just adopted a 1 year old standard poodle spayed female. This is her third home. She is a perfectly lovely dog except that she urinates in the house sometimes. We have had 3 incidents in a week, all in the same area. The former owners tell me this was a problem for them. I have never witnessed it happening so I think she does it at night. We lost a dog 3 months ago but have ahd the carpets cleaned since then. There doesn't seem to be a health problem. Any ideas on how to break this habit?

Well you could try dousing the area she urinates with one of the stainand smell removers. Something like Natures miracle If you go to the pet supply places, ask what is the best. They have enzymes in them to kill off the s,ells. Could be you never got all the old smell out of your carpet, but thought you did.
Also make sure she gets outside for a walk before bedtime so's to empty the bladder. Could be the previuos owners did not take her out enough and she did what she had to do because she had no way out. One year is still very puppish. Good luck, poodles are my favorite breed. I have a mini poodle named Sasha. She is a rescue from California.

I'll try that. It is possible there is still scent from the old dog. We do take her out just before bed and make sure she relieves herself. Also lots of exercise in the day. I think you're right about not going out enough at her last place and getting into the habit of doing it in the house.

Hi Bonny, if you havent seen her in the act of doing this are you sure it's not spay incontinence? IS this happening close to where she is sleeping? This is common, talk to your vet about it.

Thanks, but this is happening in a completely different area to where she sleeps, and she was spayed 6 months ago.
