In reading that old post about nails grown too long, I thought of a question. I know I had read before we got Nala that it is important to keep nails trimmed or the quick will grow and you will be unable to cut them without bleeding and pain. But Nala's nails generally stay pretty short and rounded without cutting them. I check them every few days and they seem fine. Except for her dewclaws, which I cut. Is this okay? If she keeps them short herself, do I need to worry about trimming them?

Jimiya, Wylie is the same way, I keep her dewclaws clipped, but I never have to clip her regular nails. Its not like she is pounding the pavement all day, but her activities seem to keep them just right, Honeybear IP: Logged |

Your lucky. If they get trimmed from the pavement no need to do it yourself. But by all mean do trim the dew claws. Wouldn't want to see her jump and have it get cought on something. I had helped out this family with their standard poodle. They did not know what they were doing. They were from Chile and I guess over there they did not even take the back dew claws off this dog as a pup. But anyway this poo had its dewclaws curling into its pad. They must of either had money issues of did not think it needed to go to the vet for it. I went over there with my whole kid and kaboodle of grooming things. They were just cutting his hair with scizzors. All in all he was clean and fed will but thats all they were doing. I had to use my hubbys dremel to cut thru the nail, I could not get my regular dog nail clipper in and around it. So I had to use that round flat blade thing to carefully cut thru it. I was scared. But it worked. I was impressed that he let me trim his face so well. Whew, you don't want to have to deal with things like that. It was very hard to speak with these people, their english was mimimal and going thru an interpreter was not fun. But I did it for the dog. He was georgous after I was done with him. IP: Logged |
