I looked into Eagle Pack but did not try it. I am considering it for my cats, though. I think it is a good food.

Thanks for replying. Go to www.eaglepack.com and read about it. I was truly impressed. After only a couple of weeks I could see a difference in Lilli's coat.

I used EaglePack for my two dogs. My older dog, Samantha, was only on it about two weeks. She did not take kindly to it at all. My puppy was doing OK on it I thought so I kept him on it for a little over a month but now I am changing him too. He has started getting hot spots. I was giving him the large breed puppy food which had corn as one of the main ingredients, which I read is one cause of hot spots. They are now both on California Natural.

Anyways, I read good stuff about it. The only reason I started on it was because I read it was supposed to be the best for large breed puppies. I think the Holistic formula is supposed to be the best. I guess all that matters is how your dog is doing on it.

I forgot to tell you that I get Eagle Pack through www.dogfooddirect.com and since I live in Wisconsin I do not pay tax or shipping.

Eagle Pack was on The Whole Dog Journals list 1998-2002, so I would guess it is a pretty darn good choice. I haven't seen it at the retailer I use so I haven't looked at the ingredients.

I tried the EPHS (chicken formula) on Natalie a while back but she was only on it for about 2 months because it seemed to be one of the many brands that irritated her anal glands. I'm pretty sure I'm going to try their new holistic lamb formula and see how she does on that. My cats absolutely love the canned Eagle Pack formulas.

I have heard the Eagle Pack Holistic Blend is supposed to be one of their better products (quality wise).

All Eagle products are made with human grade and organic ingredients. They are a multiple protein, meat based diet with no hormones, antibiotics or growth stimulants. The include viable yogurt cultures (probiotics), digestive enzymes, Glucosamine HCL for joint support (Natural and Holistic), balanced Omega 6:3 fatty acids, very high quality sequestered minerals (macro/micro) which are critical for growth and reproduction. Eagle contains absolutely no ethoxiquin preservatives, no BHA or BHT because it is only naturally preservative. In addition there is Aqua C (an Ester Vitamin C) yucca and prebiotics to encourage a healthy gut.

Based on the above ingredients I was sold on Eagle Pack. I would like to hear more from other people who use this product.

These are just some of the ingredients their formulas contain. *note not all of there formulas have what's listed below, I just C/P ingredients from several formulas

Ground Yellow Corn, Rice Flour, Pork Meal, Corn Germ Meal (Dry Milled),Rice Bran, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Fat Salt,Tomato Pomace,Cheese Meal (??)Brewers Dried Yeast

IMO a lot of these are fillers, and don't like the above ingredients. Don't like that every formula contains salt and I don't know what Cheese meal (?) is or why that would be necessary.

Would prefer to see meat sources listed ahead of the grains. Also I don't like the 28% puppy protein.

I checked their holistic formulas and realized eagle pack was not the brand I was thinking of. And no, not ALL Eagle pack products are made with organic ingredients. "Certified organic ingredients include amaranth, quinoa, dandelion" is all I could find.

Looks ok, a lot better then many commercial foods.

I think there is better out there.

Animal nutritionists agree that proteins, no fats, are the primary cause of food allergies. Your pet can be allergic to beef, but not to beef fat. Grains/carbohydrates have some protein as well, but far less than meats. Food colorings and chemical preservatives can also cause allergic reactions.

Beef, dairy products, and wheat account for 68% of adverse food reactions in dogs. Soy is one of several ingredients accounting for 25% of adverse reactions. None of these ingredients are in Eagle Pack diets. Corn and corn glutens are rarely a problem according to material gathered by the American Holistic Veterinary Association. Corn is rarely implicated. (see our ingredient page)

Nutritionists and holistic veterinarians agree on several factors that can reduce or eliminate allergies and food intolerance. They are: 1) feed a highly digestible diet, 2) include prebiotics and probiotics, 3) include digestive enzymes, 4) include higher levels of quality vitamins and minerals, and 5) divide meat protein in the diet among 3 meat meal proteins so there is not a high concentration of any single one. However, diets designed to be hypoallergenic do have a single meat source that is known to be hypoallergenic. All Eagle Pack diets excel in these factors.

You need to be careful reading information published by people promoting their own product. I am not saying that Eagle Pack is not a good food. I am just saying that ANY food can be made to sound good by good promotion people.

Read about Innova or Canidae or any of the other truly premium brands. They are all made from human-grade ingredients, no preservatives, multiple meat sources, and most of the other things you mentioned in your post. That's why they are premium foods!

I try to avoid corn in dog foods. I believe that it is a big potential allergen, and also dogs do not need grain.

BUT Eagle Pack is still a good choice, and MUCH better than grocery store stuff.

Let your dog be your guide. I went a lot by looking at Nala's waste. When I switched her to Innova, she had less poo (a LOT less) and it was nowhere near as stinky as it used to be. But she was GASSY as all heck. So I switched to Healthwise, which is supposed to be a bit easier for puppies to digest, and the gassiness went away. Her stool volume is about half what it was on the Science Diet, she only goes about twice a day instead of 5-6 times, and it doesn't smell as bad.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens with her on raw. Although I confess I have not been checking up on the poop as much with the freezing cold weather we have been having.
