My female's 61st day will be January 31st....her nipples have dropped big time but it doesn't seem like she's gaining weight....I do have an appointment to get an xray done but thats in a couple of days. What do you think? When do females usually start to show? I had 2 litters already but I took a couple of years off....i don't remember when they started to show. Thanks :-)

i'm wondering the samething my yorkie was in heat the end of dec-1st week of jan. i saw my dogs trying but she is a little taller then him and i dont think he could figure it out i never saw them "tie" but now her boobs are getting bigger i dont know if this is common after being in heat i understand that if they didnt tie she will go in heat again in 21 days which will be the end of this month. I just really want to know cuz i have planned a vacation the end of feb. and if she is that is when she is due so i wont be able to go on vacation but i really want to know sooner so i can cancle the cabin and hopefully get my money back

well i just noticed my lab's nipples getting bigger in the last 3 weeks. Its just wierd that her due date is in 10 days and I haven't noticed her getting any bigger. I also did not see them "tie together" so I'm not for sure she is pregnant. I can understand your worry, Rene. Hope eveything works out! :-)

She might be pregnant. My friends Staffordshire Terrier was pregnant and they thought it was a false pregnancy because she did not get any bigger. She had 7 puppies and they were huge puppies. So I think that she is probably pregnant.

Hi Atie is not needed for a bitch to fall pregnant i have had 2bitches concieve without a tie.

If your dog is at her 61st day you should be able to see and feel the puppies moving around in her abdomen when she is lay down gently rub her side in a circular motion and the pups usually surface.

If a bitch is mis mated or fails to concieve she will still go through the motions as if she was pregnant this is commonly known as a phantom or false pregnacy.

They show some or all signs of being pregnant and will even mother things like teddies and balls.

Xrays or ultrasound will determine wether she is indeed pregnant did u count 65days from the first day of mating?

How many times did the dog mate with her?
Bitches are usually most fertile around the 9-12 day of there heat cycle.
The sperm from the dog can live in the uterus for 5days so even if mated her on an infertile day she is still likely to fall pregnant.

Rene, Like i say a tie is not needed for a bitch to concieve a tie helps highten the chances of pregnancy.

Palpation of the bitches abdomen at 25 days by a vet they can then feel the floating foetus's.

3Weeks of pregnancy ultra sound scanning can be used to determine if she is pregnant and around how many pups that are in there.

Hope this helps.
I breed german shepherds jsut incase you wonder how i know this stuff lol

i'm glad you are getting an x-ray becasue when i told my vet my concerns that is what they suggested but not till 60 days or ultra sound at 25 days. They also informed me that if they didnt tie she could have a false pregancy (great)i also hear that if you squeeze her nipples milk should come out espically at your late stage. when i bread my rotty she only gained like 5 lbs then she only had one puppy. Let us know about the x-ray and good luck hopefully you will have babies soon

X-rays of a pregnant bitch can be done after the 45th day.
Milk production can also occur in a false pregnacy along with enlarged nipples, nesting behaviour loss of appetite.

Thanks for responding everyone! I dropped off my female on Novemeber 30th and picked her up the next day...December 1st, we were watching them "in the act" but they did not tie ( i thought they had to tie together to conceive) so we left her there untill the next night. So she is at her 52nd day today. She seems to be a little bigger but not much, other people can see a little difference but not me. I have been taking her temp for the last couple of days...just incase she is pregnant then I'll know what her normal temp is. Mike you seem to know a lot...I'm getting there. How long have you been breeding? How bout you Rene?

thanks Gina

one more question...if she was having a false pregnancy would she have gone into heat last month? I have noticed that she isn't eating too much but I'm thinking its because she's upset because I sent my other dog to my mothers house until the puppies are born. She loves my other dog...its so cute!

If she is having a false pregnacy this usually only lasts 41 days some bitches go the full 65days.
some bitches eat loads during pregnancy others dont.

if she is having a false pregnancy and is producing milk she will need to have an injection to help absorb the milk back into her body.
as this can cause mastitis in her teats

awww yorkies i think they are really cute dogs..

I know how worrying the time is during pregnancy and during the whelp i was a nervous wreck the first time.

The bitch that i had mated on monday this will be her first litter hope she does ok as she is 5yrs old she been checked by the vet and everything came back healthy and normal so i know that health is not going to be a problem lucky i have a bitch that will foster the pups if she dont look after them or its bottle feeding for me again lol

lablover, with many females its not until the last week or two when you begin to see a change (can also feel). Even with a false pregnancy.

Do you have any good whelping and breeding books to read over as well as someone experienced to help you with whelping?

Hi lablover & Renee, Boy does this bring back memories! The reason I found this site was because my mini dauchshund became pregnant by a pomeranian that snuck into my back yard. I was a basket case! She had her pups and all is well. But my point is: the people here "like Mike" (charmedagain, incase you don't know his name) really helped me through the whole thing. I don't know what I would have done without these fine folks. I'm sure you'll do fine! just listen and do what is suggested, it will help take the pressure off.

I kept wondering about Casey (my mini) too! and then about 4 or 5 days before she delivered, I could feel the pups moving inside of her. The night she went into labor we were laying on the couch and her water broke. I had a whelping box that I put her in, and she had 5 puppies. It started at 10:30 pm and the last was born at 8:30am the next morning. Good luck to you both! keep us posted...Thanks! Susan

Jas, as I said before...she has 10 more days...and I haven't seen a change...and you said females usually don't show untill the last 2 weeks...well Its 9 days to go now...I was just unsure. And yes I have books and a friend that will be helping me with the whelping of the puppies. This happens to me a lot. I ask a question and someone who obviously has been breeding for some time...questions my knowledge. So are you telling me that you never had questions when you first started out? I like to learn from many people, that is why I ask questions on this website.

I didn't see anyone questioning your knowledge, just asking questions for clarification. I have also seen many helpful posts in this thread.

It's difficult to know from a couple of posts what level of knowledge someone is coming in with - hence Jas's question about whether you have books and someone to help you.

Susan came to us with very little knowledge (right, Susan?). Others have had litters before but have forgotten or had bad things happen or whatever other reason. We ask questions to find out where you are and what you know and what you still need to know. No offense intended.

Other than that, I can offer nothing to this discussion. "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies!!"

Nevermind lablover, forget that I bothered to reply. Seeing that you haven't posted numerous times, I've no idea how much you know. I wasn't "questioning" anything or reprimanding you for having questions. Just thinking it might be useful for your own piece of mind if you had someone to be there with you and some info to rely on. Even the most experienced breeders do not know everything, everyone has questions.

And to clarify and repeat, what I said was some females don't show until the last WEEK or TWO WEEKS.
The ninth week of preg brings a lot of changes. Gestation has been reported from about 56 - 72 days so you see there is a bit of a window there no matter when the expected due date is. If really unsure if your dog is pregnant get your dog to the vets for an x-ray or ultrasound.

but don't worry you wont hear anymore from me
