For the past week, off and on, my aussie 3 year old has been inconsistent in his appetite, otherwise he's been acting completly "himself" and healthy. We wrote it off to an emotional issue since 2 weeks ago our oldest dog a bloodhound passed away. Just last night I was awakened twice by my aussie having what appeared to be seizures, like grand mal epilepsy. I called our vet and of course they want to put him on heavy meds - phenyl barbital which can cause liver damage. Isn't there anything more safely administered than such drastic measures? Once when our aussie, Max was about one and a half they put him on a med for traveling (we drove on a a vacation over a 1000 miles) to "keep him calm" and the poor guy was a zombie and couldn't "evacuate" for 4 days...needless to say we stopped those meds for the rest of the vacation. Any ideas? I'm thinking despite the breed penchant for seizures...since he was "off his feed" from missing his older brother Jake the bloodhound and wasn't eating with his regular appetite (and Gusto)that maybe this is a blood sugar related reaction? 'Cuz otherwise he's a healthy happy boy. IP: Logged |

Did they run any tests on him? A friend of mine has a rat terrier that has seziers (spelling). He's not on meds and is doing fine. He only has them when he gets overly excited, or worn down, or scared. Rarely does he have one for no reason. I would monitor him carefuly for a while before putting him on such a harsh med. If he continues tohave them, and they are severe, I would consider it then. IP: Logged |

Can I ask you what kind, if any, heartworm prevention you are using? And has your dog had more than one seizure? My toy poodle had a seizure and the first thing the vet did was take her off HeartGard as it has ivermectin in it (casues seizures in certain breeds). That wasn't what caused her seizure though, but it was a posssibility. My poodle's seizure was actually caused by tick fever and she never had another one. IP: Logged |

Sorry for the delays in responses...Max is doing better...originally had 4 seizures in one day.TOO many for a 3 yr old. Too many for anyone. Anyway took him to the Emer. Clinic, the Vet and so on...he is on meds (phenolbarbital) right now and NO MORE SEIZURES. HURRAY! He had ALL the tests and nothing showed up except a slight possibility of Valley Fever (common to Arizona pets and people alike)He's also on a med for THAT...Max gets his tests next week to see how the meds are treating his kidneys/liver and in a month for a follow up Valley Fever test...so we wait and see - NOW we have an aged cat that's got problems, either health related or behavioral. This MAY be the Year of the Monkey but it's playing hell on my dogs and cats! IP: Logged |

Hi, I've read your post a couple of times, but had nothing further to add since I know nothing about seizures. But wanted you to know that i hope he gets better soon! Good luck! Susan IP: Logged |
