Hey all, I'm new here. I'm totally in love with the IG's, but I am VERY hesitant to get one due to the risk of leg fractures.

Can any one with experience tell me how common is this really?

Thanks,
RL

Very. In my short stint as a vet tech...(2 months) two of them came in. One was 8 months old roughly and he was staying there for his second fracture. Another one was 1 and was in for his first. Dont get this dog if you have children..they are too rough for this breed unless they are older like...12+ or so.

How were these two IG's injured?

Anybody else have experience with IG's and fractures?

Any IG owners have tips on preventing this?

No idea honestly. Roughhousing with bigger dogs or kids...or maybe just accidentally getting stepped on. All puppies are fragile when they are young and still growing.....IG owners juist have to be extra careful and they will make wonderful pets.

Bump.

Any IG owners want to comment?

Please, the more info I can get from experienced owners the better.

Thanks,
RL

Ya know, If you are interested in this breed of dog I would go for it. I have never heard of them being subsceptable to fractures. What I have heard is that they are the most loving dogs and they love to cuddle. The AKC site has a list of breeders and I would start from there. Every state has a breed club with some breders listed so just look for your area. I would go for it. I should also add that IG rescue is probably a great place to get your dog because most of them are already trained and not as expensive plus there are many dogs out there that just need a home. It is up to you. Good luck!

Anybody else care to comment?

If anyone out there has experience with this breed please voice your wisdom in this arena, as the big descision rests on other owners experiences.

Thanks,
RL

I have been coming to this messageboard for a while now and I don't recall seeing any IG owners here. I think thats why no one has responded. I would contact some Veternarians in your area if you are that concerned about fractures. The IG breeders would be able to tell you very extensively about the breed. I asked alot of questions to the breeder I got my Huskies from and any reputable breeder will readily and happily answer anything you want to know. Also, it doesn't hurt to go on the internet and type in Italian Greyhounds and look at sites. I have two Huskies and I checked out websites, Husky messageboards, and read books. I wish you lots of luck on your research.
