Thanks, Maisey!

I sometimes find the people on the other board we go to intimidating. Maybe it's because they do rescue and therefore have a lot of experience with a lot of other dogs, so that I end up feeling like some sort of country lout or a kindergartner or something, LOL!

I really don't see much Catahoula in Cal except for possibly the markings. The picture is not very good. But he doesn't have Catahoula ears, and he looks way too trim to be a Catahoula. Don't they usually have big, stocky bodies, like the guy on the page you linked me to?

I am really torn over Cal. I wrote for more info and got a sketchy reply. So I wrote again for more specific info and got no reply at all. I wonder if they have someone else inquiring about him so they feel free to ignore me.

When Nala and I go to TTouch in 2 weeks, we will be driving relatively near his shelter. If I take off work Friday, I could get there before they close and see him. But I wouldn't be able to pick him up on the way home because it would be late Sunday. And I can't handle two dogs alone for this seminar.

I would like to go and see him next weekend instead, but it's a good 3 hour drive at least, and my husband still is pretty adamant about not wanting another dog. I was thinking of asking him if we could take Cal for a month and if it really wasn't working out then we would find him a good home. I don't see him going for it, though. All he sees are dollar signs and possible further disruption of his life.

I also wanted them to cat test Cal before I make a trip out there. The description says "friendly with cats" but you could say that about Nala if the cat was friendly toward her as well. She LOVES my cats - so much so that she chases them around trying to get them to play with her!

I guess I will try mailing them again on the cat issue. ACD's can be a ton of work, but if he's a mix you can't really predict what he will be like.

Thanks again for asking for me!

I think the other board is sometimes intimidating because people are more apt to be blunt, I also think a large part of that group has a long history. I met two people who live in my area on that board and we have since gotten together for play dates with our dogs, I like both of them really well, but they have told me some stories about the old board most of them are from. I just refuse to get involved in any of those spats and go along my merry way. I do find that they give really useful information though, I've learned alo9t from reading posts there. However, they are not Catahoula people and seem to be forgetting that there is more than one breed with a merle gene, I also don't see how they can see in the picture provided ...if there is ticking or merling. Remember it doesn't have to be just two breeds either...could be a whole lot of mixing going on there.
Sometimes rescues and shelters are over run and understaffed and it takes a while to answer. If Cal is currently in a shelter...they most of the time can only do brief evaluations and really don't know enough about the dog to answer detailed questions. Did you see Sadie on that page? She is in foster care with a Catahoula person.

Sadie on which page?

Cal went through their Lucky Dog program, so *someone* knows him well. You would think the inmates could provide a report when they are done.

The e-mail I did get says he "has a super disposition" and loves to play with other dogs, but has not been exposed to cats. His petfinder description says he is calm with cats.

They should at least be able to cat test him before I drive all the way out there!

Volunteers often place the info on the web sites and much of the time it's not correct. Try calling and asking for the information or a name of someone who could help you, tell them you are not getting a response to your e-mails.
Sadie is on the same page as Cal on petfinder.

Yay! Good for Sadie!

I will call the shelter tomorrow. Hopefully I will find someone who knows something about Cal. I did re-send my e-mail today as well.

He is absolutely gorgeous! Garden City is where the people we bought our house from moved. I wish I hadn't looked at his shelter page, though. There are a bunch of black labs, and one of the descriptions says, "Just another big black lab. We don't have much luck being adopted here." That kills me - "just" another big black lab. Why can't people spay and neuter their dogs?!

I would think a Catahoula would be tough on cats. Did you have problems training Witt not to chase? But he was a puppy...

I really had more trouble with Dooley than Witt. Both of them will still let out after a cat outside, but they both recall well so when I say COME they turn around and head back to me. Inside the house, I just tell Witt leave it if he is pestering the cat and he does. Once in a while he will start to chase the cat, I either say "NO" and tell him to leave it or I let the cat nail him. My cats are not afraid of the dogs though and the female will catually instigate play with the dogs sometimes. Catahoulas like any other herding dog do have high prey drive and will usually give chase to anything that runs, but like all dogs they are also individuals, there are Catahoulas that don't chase cats and for the ones that do ...you can train them to recall. Just like calling them off herding or work, they need to learn a command for quitting and be reliable on it. My Poodle is the worst at chasing the cats and he doesn't do it because of prey drive either, he does it because he in onary and jealous. The cats DO run from him, I trust their judgement and he gets "in trouble" for his discrepencies. They will test the dog on cats...especially the people who ar involved with him. You will also get a good response to inquiries off that board.

Well I got an e-mail last night about Cal. They said it would be hard to test him in the facility (I assume they mean the Correctional Facility), and that they would have to bring him back to the shelter to do that. I thought he was already back in the shelter after his training, but it would seem he is not. I am getting that clarified.

But they did say they were going to take him to a nursing home to see how he does there, and that there are usually cats there so they will be able to test him then.

The fact that they are taking him to the nursing home speaks volumes about his self-control to me. The thought of Nala in a nursing home is either comical or tragic. She would maul those poor people in her excitement.
