Samantha has been having a lot of digestive problems since I decided to switch her food about a month ago. I now have her on chicken soup and california natural canned. I am going to try to get her on only California Natural. Well, her digestive problems seem to be getting a bit better. Her stools are firming up. Yesterday, it was completely firm. Today, half of it was firm, the other half wasn't runny but it wasn't formed either. Anyways, it is green and VERY smelly. Is green an OK color? And what about the smell? The frequency/amount is normal. Do you think her system is just working itself out? Second (not really sure if this is a question), she has ulcers and the vet told me to put her on Tagament which I have been doing for the past 2 weeks. Well, yesterday I was thinking about it and Tagament is an acid reducer. However, because of the diarrhea I have been giving her yogurt and was in the process of buying her acidophilius which are both acid generators (sort of). I thought it was kind of stupid to have her on both so I stopped both two days ago. Maybe this has something to do with the color/smell? Also, I was reading about giving dogs pumpkin. I read two uses for it that seem to contradict eachother. One said it was for diarrhea, the other said it was a stool softener. Which is it? I'm going to the vet on Tuesday to get the puppy his last set of shots and I figured I would ask him about it if she doesn't get completely better by then. Other than the digestive issues, she is acting great. IP: Logged |

It sounds good what you are doing. It takes a couple of weeks for a new food to kick in. I would only keep her on one food, not a mixture so you can see how she reacts to it. Have you considered that maybe your dog could be allergic to something in the foods you had been giving her previously? My dog, Brute, had digestive problems (chronic diarrhea and soft stools) for a couple of months after I got him but after research and vet bills, I figured out he was allergic to corn. There are some ingredients that your dog could be allergic to. Sometimes it is hard to figure it out cause you have to figure it out ingredient by ingredient. I have heard that grains like corn are common causes of allergies. In my case I compared the ingredients on the back of the foods and the treats he had and went from there. I am not saying that this is the reason for the problems but this is just what happened to me. That is something to consider. Pumpkin is good for firming up stools but not for chronic diarrhea. So I wouldn't use it until you figure out what the problems are. Good luck. Give the food some time to work and see what happens. You might want to try some dog foods like Nutro Lamb and Rice (I figured out Brute was allergic to corn on this food), Royal Canin, or I heard that Innova is good. Those are dog foods that have more natural and healthy ingedients with stuff like duck or lamb that isn't as bad on the digestive system and might help you figure out if your dog is having trouble with food allergies. Good luck! I hope I was able to give some ideas to help you. Let us know how he is doing. IP: Logged |
