My husband and I are at our wits end. Something is wrong with our Pug, Lilo. She is almost a year old and has always been a very active dog. She rarely use to sit still, preferring instead to play or jump or run. Starting Sunday of this week Lilo has been listless and depressed acting. She still walks around the house to be wherever we are, but she no longer plays or acts interested in doing anything. It was the complete opposite of what she normally acts we took her to the vet. It is not her normal vet that saw her as she was out of town that day. The vet did blood work, skin analysis, x-rays, etc. and said everything came back normal. I still think there must be something else wrong with her other than just being depressed since it was such a sudden thing. Can anyone give me stories or insight?
A little background: We do both work out of the house all day and Lilo stays in the crate while we are gone (large, roomy). She is out of it the whole time we are awake in the evening and we put her back in before we go to bed. She gets out in the mornings while we are getting ready for work. We have talked about leaving her out constantly but she liked to chew on everything and still had those puppy tendancies so we were going to wait. That's why she is so different suddenly-she doesn't want to chew, or chase the ball, or even move away from sittign near us.
I really love Lilo so much more than I thought I would when we got a dog and I hate to see her miserable. Thanks for any information you may have.

I have a pug/beagle mix who is very "puggy," and acts very similar to your Lilo! She is about 9 months now, and is very chewy and active all the time, so we too leave her in a crate during the day. One thing that I have read about pugs is that they are extremely hyper as puppies, but as adults they tend to be completely opposite-- very lazy and laid back. That is why so many end up in foster care- people buy them as puppies expecting laid back puppies because adult pugs are so lazy, but that is not what they get At least we knew what we were getting, and it sounds like you did too.
Could it be that Lilo is just growing older and calming down? I've read that pugs can make this change from crazy to calm fairly quickly, though I don't know about just a week's time, but in any case, it's something to think about. It's nice to hear from another pug owner, there aren't too many posting right now

Have her checked for Parvo NOW!
Just because it didn't show up in her blood work then doesn't mean she doesn't have it. During its "incubation" period, it often will not show up.

Thanks for both your replies to my questions. Lilo tested negative for Parvo when they did the tests thankfully. Yesterday when I went home she started acting a little more normal, so it's possible I guess that she just has a virus or something. We'll still keep a close eye on her to make sure she gets completely back to normal.

When I got a pug I definitely wanted a dog that would be energetic to keep up with my energetic daughter. I know that when Lilo gets older she'll be more of a lap dog and we're fine with that. My husband and I are even thinking of getting Lilo a sister so she'll have someone to play with when we're not home.

Glad to hear Lilo is doing better. If you have any other comments/questions about Lilo, please don't hesitate to post, because like I said there aren't too many pug owners posting on this board right now and I always like to learn new things about pugs that might help me with Cameron
