We adopted a dog from the humain society in August. She is a great dog and is very smart. She will bark at the door to go outside 99% of the time the other 1%she will pee on the couch, no where else. Yesterday she was sitting on the couch with me and I suddenly smelled pee and she had peed on the couch with no warning and she had been outside not to long before that. Please help us we are desprate. We really love her and think she is a great dog but we can not afford to but a new couch beacuse she thinks it is her toilet. IP: Logged |

Have you tried cleaning the couch with an odor neutralizer cleaner (such as Nature's Miracle)? If she can smell her urine there, she will keep using that spot. Or you could just not allow her on the couch anymore.

I doubt that she "likes" to pee there. I would first have her checked by your vet to rule out any physical reason for her accidents. How old is she? When was she spayed? Make sure you are cleaning the couch thoroghly with a product like Natures Miracle that uses enzymes to remove the odor completly not just cover it up. If it was an accident the first time, but wasn't cleaned properly, she may still smell her own smell there and consider it her "potty spot". Is she asleep when this happens or does she literally get up and squat there? You said you were on the couch with her when you smelled it...so I was thinking maybe she was asleep. When this happens what do you do after? IP: Logged |

Thanks to those that have responded and here are the answers to some of the questions you asked. I am pretty sure she was not asleep, she does not prefere to sit on the couch, she will only hop on the couch to tell us she wants to play, otherwise she is on her bed or the floor. When we first got her we had her tested for food allergies because she was having loose bowel problems and is now on a special diet. Besides her allergys and the normel worms, which have been treated, she is healthy. She no longer has accidents in the house expect when she pees on the couch which is not very often it still occers which means she is not really housetrained. She will ask to go outside by pacing at the door and she is also begginig to bark. We have been sucessfull in increasing her frequncy in going outside with crate training. In fact I don't belive she has had an acident before this in at least a month 1/2. I have tryed a few products but I will also try what was suggested. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. IP: Logged |

Sounds like she is doing very well. Clean the spot thoroughly with something like Nature's Miracle. Sometimes dogs regress and have accidents for no apparent good reason. Hopefully that's all this is!

I heard Warren Epstein on the radio respond to a similar problem someone was having with their dog peeing on the bed. I wish I had remembered exactly what he said as I had a stray that I took in start doing the same thing. Anyway, he said that the dog peed on the bed because your sent as on the bed and the dog was doing this to sort of claim you as theirs. I can't remember what he suggested as a solution. IP: Logged |
