I need some help on this one soon. I have been feeding Zeus a brand of Dog Food (pride) that I was getting from a local feed store. Well, I moved , and no one locally carries it. I have noticed most of the postings on dog food have included brands I have never seen here in Ohio. I don't care for Iams, Dad's , Pedigree, or Walmart brand Ol' Roy. He is on a high protein puppy formula right now and it doesn't have a lot of fillers. Any recommendations?? IP: Logged |

have you checked the food for thought thread? lots of good brands recomended there. How old is Zeus? Should he still be on puppy food? Check out your new feed stores. Mine carry Innova and California natural which are excellant. Innovas web site has a store finder too Honeybear IP: Logged |

Zeus is 7 months old, so yes, he should still be on puppy food. In fact the vet recommended until he was at least a year and a half. I haven't found any local feed stores yet. I have found a Pet Supplies PLus, a petsmart, a pet land, walmart, K-Mart, and a groomer. IP: Logged |

You might also want to research when to switch off puppy foods. There was a thread about that just recently. Zeus is a rottie - I would consider that a large breed. Some people say large breeds should be taken off puppy food at 4 months. Some say to mix it with adult food. The main thing is you don't want him to grow too fast. You want him to be on the lean side as a puppy, and never quite full. This will help to avoid bone and joint problems common in large dogs. Vets and pet stores will tell you to feed puppy food for 18 months or so. Usually this is wrong. Look for the BLUE food at PetSmart (ours has yet to carry it, but it is on the website). Also look at Natural Balance if you can find it (PetCo sells it here). You might also look for specialty shops or groomers that carry "the good stuff" - Innova, Canidae, Eagle Pack, Chicken Soup, etc. Oh, and whatever you decide, make sure you get some soon so you can mix it with his old food to make the transition easier on his tummy. PetsMart now carries one called Blue Buffalo, that looks good, it's the only food I would consider from that store. . Chicken Soup For the Dogs Soul is a good choice and easy to find. Petco carries Natural Balance and thats a good choice. A bit less expensive..and in my opinion not quite as good as Canidae or Innova, but still a decent food is Precise, they offer their foods in formulas to fit the dogs stage. At your dogs age he would be on the Growth formula. It's an in between stage..between puppy and adult. I would also suggest that you do your own research on large breed puppies and high protein foods, vets don't always know alot about nutrition, just the basics and many are not familiar with whats on the market. The FOOD FOR THOUGHT thread on this site is a good place to start and there are several posts, one even recent that talk about feeding a large breed puppy. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/ http://www.precisepet.com/default.asp http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/faq_july_todate.html http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles.htm http://www.bluebuff.com/ IP: Logged |

I found a site where you can purchase food online that lets you see the ingredients and nutritional values of the different products, even for the different types of the same brands. It covered a lot of different brands and some I have never heard of. There was a lot of info there so I think I'll look for the one with the closest ingredients, since I like the Pride brand (which They didn't have either) so much. IP: Logged |
