For you agility people, I just have a quick question that I am not finding an answer to. I am not sure I am excited about the way our agility instructor wants us to teach targeting. I am researching other methods, but in order to choose what to do I need to know one thing... Is it my goal to have Nala touch a target with her nose, or with her paw?

It's for making sure they contact the contact areas on some of the obstacles. It would seem to me that making them touch it with their noses would really slow down the run. A paw would seem to be better, but then what do I know?

When Dooley was doing agility we taught him "touch" by using string cheese bits and a paper plate. If not the plate then the cheese was stuck right on the contact point. The idea is to get them to pause briefly, and come all the way down to the bottom or end making sure they have hit the contact area. It was his nose that touched, but the treat was placed so that when he was doing this his feet were in the contact zone. String cheese works well because it sticks and stays. IP: Logged |

Jimaya, you want a slight pause, so that you have the opportunity to direct your dog to the next obstacle. Trust me you will have a hard time keeping in front of Nala. You do not want her to assume what the next obstacle is, she will make a mistake. She needs to look to you after each obstacle for the next cue, because each course will be different. IP: Logged |

Okay, I will go with teaching her to touch a target with her nose. Although the paw would be fun - leads easily to "shake" and other fun tricks!
