Hello, I have an 8 year old rottie that is in good health, but lately he won't eat Science Diet anymore. We've had him on it since he was a puppy. He usually eats 4 cups/day now it is down to about 1 cup per day. He'll eat meat, or if you put meat juice on the food, he'll eat it. I tried switching to the "active adult" formula, and that doesn't do anything. I really don't want to put him on canned food. Any ideas?

I am still using Science Diet and Eukanuba mixed .Half and half .Mine seem to do really well that way .If they get to where they do not like it much ,I sprinkle some goodies (like lamb and rice )in with it and in a few days they go back to eating like always .Have to help them out sometimes .I don't like the same ole same le everyday either ! LOL ! Try mixing with one that has a better taste .My vet ,bless him ! ,says that Science Diet just has no lure(taste ) and is why most dogs try to ignore it ..LOL!

I would try another brand. Maybe Nutro or Natural Balance?

MY DOG PREFERS TO EAT THE SAME FOOD OUT OF THE "BIG DOG" BOWL EVEN IF HER FOODS THE SAME AS HIS. THAT MIGHT BE WORTH TRYING

Speaking as someone who has worked for more than a year at grooming salons....and seeing dogs coats DRAMATICALLY improve after switching to a food that doesnt contain so much corn (many (not all) dogs get dry skin from a corn based diet) I would STRONGLY suggest switching to a food like Nutro Natural Choice. No eukanuba..no science diet. Switch and get a few cans of wet food. Put some hot water and a spoonful of wet in the bowl..mix them up so its a soupy mess...put the dry in there and stir it up. The wet food/water combo coats the dry food and adds extra flavor.

Go to www.eaglepack.com. They have dry food and then you get the canned to make a gravy to pour over the dry and it makes it very tasty. Go to WWW.Greatdanelady.com and ready about different feed programs.

It might not be that he doesn't like the food anymore - I suspect he's holding out for the meat or the good stuff he knows you add to his food! One of my older rescues is like this. We have to add wet food or Natural Balance slices (comes in a big tube), smells good! She is a very finicky eater, dislikes raw food and is very choosy about what she eats.

That said it might be an excellent time to switch to a high quality food with a different taste.
