I have a friend who picked a puppy out of a litter of 15 it is the runt and i think she said it is a black lab. the problem is they first thought it was a girl they go vist every weekend a couple of weeks later they noticed something and said oh it's a boy now a few weeks later it looks like it has female and male genatils (sp) they vet is not even sure which it is has anyone ever heard of this i never have. the vet told her that their should be no health issues only thing is it will have to be spayed and nuetered. even if there was health issues she would take it anyway she has visited it since the day it was born and it's now 7 weeks so she is very attached

Rene, I posted your question on another board asking for their opinions. Below I have pasted an answer that was posted by a breeder.

"I would assume that this is no different than when it happens in humans. I would think that neutering/spaying too soon might cause more problem. It's better to try to find out what the dominant sex is. Once this can be assessed, the neutering should be done accordingly. Automatically neutering/spaying before this assessment can be done may cause harm. I would feel it would be important to learn what hormonal balance there might be. This would give more clue to behavior and how to train.
If these people are now attached to the dog, this is a wonderful thing. Many people would not want a 'flawed' dog."

Thanks Maisey i'm sure the vet will fix the dog at the right time i just thougt it was odd she is not sure what to name it now first it was going to be sofy for a girl and then dakota for a boy now she is not sure i told her dakota could be a both boy and girl name. that is also true i didnt think about the hormonal balance and training issues i will have to let her know but she loves this puppy and i'm sure she will do alot of research about this

thanks again

Here are two more responses:

"Bobbi's right, this does occur inhumans and is referred to as ambiguous genitalia. If the sex is unidentifiable a karyotype is done to see what the chromosomes show. "

"Another vets opinion might be helpful too. Even a third might not hurt especially before the pup is neutered/spayed. Mother nature has some tricks in her bag."
