Holy cow, her dog Lucy is gorgeous!!

I forwarded the page to my husband. He's a backpacker. I would love to go with a dog sometime. I think Nala will eventually be a great hiking dog, although too small to carry much weight. She will probably be able to carry her own food and bowl, though.

She's not a barker, which is good. But my husband would never let her into his precious tent, so other arrangements would have to be made.

Beau is her pride and joy and the one she talks about the most.

He's nice, too. But I love Lucy!

Errrr. No pun intended.

its amazing what your dogs can do. I was white water rafting a few years ago and came across a woman who was kayaking with her dog, looked like an aussie heeler, had its life vest on the whole works. Now with this I wonder does the dog really like this kind of stuff. There is no way I could take Jake on a hiking trip like that, he would wonder where the heck the couch was!

I think that is called Paddling honeybear, she has a new section on it on her site. I think you might be surprised at Jake if you took him backpacking. Even short little hikes can be very stimulating for your dog. Even if he didn't like it..you have Wylie to take. We use our backpacks for day trips to the fair or a dog event, the beach..anything like that, it's handy to have all those pockets for storing things. We always have Dooley or Witt carry the freebies or phamlets we get at dog events, then when we get home and empty them they are like little kids going through their days stash.

I just browsed through quickly, but there was some good stuff there, and the site will be getting a more thorough reading later.

Most of the time, even if a dog is unsure of something at first, as long as it's not completely terrifying, they'll persevere to be with their people, and eventually will get to either not be bothered by, or even enjoy those types of things. Goo loves going out in the boat, to the point that when she sees her life jacket (I don't want to be trying to keep myself and a 60 lb dog afloat if something happens and we end up overboard), she starts prancing all around and practically drags me down the yard to get on. I also agree that the added stimulation of being outside makes most dogs forget about "the comforts of home".

Here are (yes, I realize you're probably getting sick of my "pictorials" by now) some pics of the hounds on varius boat trips from the past couple years...

Goo on an early-spring-evening fishing trip in the scrawny 8 ft sailboat (minus it's sail), about as close to a kayak as you'll find in this area

Again in summer of 2002 (that's Annie in the background, and a slightly bigger boat)

Annie again (she likes to go back and forth from the front to the back of the boat, occasionally raiding the bait bucket, whereas Goo takes up her post at the front and stays there the whole time unless something else catches her attention)

Goo on the big boat, waiting for us slowpokes to catch up

Another of Goo's favorite parts of boat trips.. the breeze

I love your pictorials! Keep 'em coming.

I wish my mom had put life vests on her dogs, it was a couple years ago so i don't even know if dog vests were on the market yet..but they bought a brand new boat, a really nice one and were out on the ocean at night when they totalled it. They lost all three dogs and my mother and her husband barely made it. She won't take another dog on a boat..but even with a life vest her current dogs (chi's) probably wouldn't survive the temps.
I think most dogs love to do whatever their people are doing. Darby is not fond of my horse, but he has a fit if he's at the barn and I get on my horse. He wants to ride too!
Amanda's site is very cool...she is a very active person and has alot of advice on quite an array of activities you can do with your dogs.

Yes, we take Ranger hiking. He loves it! We went hiking again on Saturday, and went almost the whole way in a creek (meaning we used the creek as a trail, since we got in one place, couldn't get back up there, and couldn't find another place to get out for a while!). Ranger loved it! He liked chasing the little bubbles in the water and trying to eat them! He didn't like the drop offs though (even though they would be only a few inches!). We haven't tried kayaking with him yet! Maybe when we get him a life jacket, and when he will have learned to sit still and not rock the boat!

Goob, love your pics! We have a boat we go on the lakes, Wylie really doesnt like going, actually she is a homebody she doenst like goijng anywhere, but hates to be left behind. but Jake just loves it, As soon as he sees my husband getting it ready he goes beserk!, we have tie downs in it for him because when it is just him and me and I am trying to launch the boat, Jake is trying to to jump in the water!

Maisey - the hiking is good for Jake, he does need to get into better shape as well as me. I had foot surgery a year ago and am just starting to be walk distance. We actually did a hike on Sun for about an hour, thought I was going to have to carry Jake back but Wylie just loved it, she came back and immed wanted to play frisbee

Oooh! Goob! I forgot to say earlier how much I liked the pics! I didn't really have a chance to look at them! I wish we had something besides kayaks to take Ranger out in, I think he would just love it! Although, there is a marina near our home, maybe we will do that sometime (after he stops growing so we can get him a lifejacket!)
