One technique is to trade him for something else. Some people use a treat. You say "drop it" and hold the treat to the side of the pup's mouth. He will probably drop the ball to get the treat. Then you praise him, and throw the ball for him for another reward. Another technique is to play two-ball - which is fetch with two balls. When he comes back with one ball, show him the other ball and tell him to "drop it". The idea is for him to drop the ball so he can get the other ball, which you then throw for him to fetch.

The technique Jimaya suggested is a good one. I never used that, I think it never occured to me lol. I simply took hold of the ball and as I pulled a little said "give", if he didn't I turned away from him and ignored him. When I could feel him loosen his grip on the ball I would say "good boy", he usually let go when I said that. After you say it a whole lot in the same way they get the idea. Dooley is the kind of dog that wants YOU to play with him though, so the idea that if he wanted me to play with him he had to "give" it up, worked for him. If your pup is perfectly happy to play on his own without you..you may have to get creative. I saved the command "drop it" for when they had something in their mouth that was dangerous. I also don't appreciate having to bend over to shag the ball off the ground, so I will only accept the ball if it is placed in my hand. He learned that quick. I have three bulging disks in my back...he can darn well hand me the ball. Witt would rather play tug of war and it doesn't matter what the toy is...we used the same technique with him and he is getting good at "giving", although playing fetch is not his thing unless it is the most dangerous stick he can find! Three months is awfully young..be persistent and consistent, your pup will get it. IP: Logged |

Hey thats a good idea!!! Smokey has taken up his game of fetch again. Since Char got pregnant (the last litter) he was a BIG dog and thought the game was dumb, but now he's back to his KID self....Char even went after the rawhide bone!!! (its the only thing he fetches)
