My 7 month old cocker spaniel wont walk on his leash. He starts out fine, does his business, and then runs around like he's excited and wants to play. 1 second later he sits and wont move. I figured he was tired so i gave him treats and that doesnt always work. He seems very stubborn. He sits and pulls with his neck. I then pick him up and carry him into my house. After he's in he starts sprinting aroung the room. Is he messing with me?

Yep! pretty much!!! You're too funny....Although 7months isn't all that old. Keep trying the treats with him, perhaps you can put him on a leash inside the house and practice with him. There was a good post on this a while back, I'll try to find it for you....Susan

Dogs have to be leash trained, and evidently yours never was! I'm sure you can find some more info about leash training if you do a search.

Some techniques are to take it slow, and use treats to coax him along. Be happy and excited and call to him and offer treats. The neighbors will think you are insane.

Another technique is to carry him down the street a little ways and then walk back. Sometimes they like to move toward the house.

Walking him inside where there are less distractions is a good idea. In fact, if you tether him to you with a leash and make him go wherever you do for a while, it might help. But you need to have patience and not force him when he plops his butt down and refuses to walk.

You can also try running or walking backwards in front of him quickly to help him get the idea.

Good luck and let us know how he is doing.

Sounds to me like he's walking you!!! he's spoiled and your letting him get away with it. Try getting a harness, you'll have a bit more control and it wont' hurt his lil' neck when you pull.

Actually, you have less control with a harness because it doesn't move the dog's head. Just like with a horse, turning the head is the key to turning a dog.

It doesn't sound like control is the problem - sitting and not moving is a totally different thing.

If control is a problem, I have had success with the Gentle Leader. Like anything else, it is only a tool and you should work on not needing it as the dog becomes better trained.

You know, I have to agree with samsinsations on this one. Freebie wouldn't walk with a collar either. I put a harness on him, and have never had a problem...I wonder why that is!

Hmmm, maybe he just didn't like the sensation around his neck?

All dogs are different, so it's certainly worth a shot. I think I have every form of harness, leash, and collar ever made. We tried them all!

you all are great. ill try everything slowly and get back to you. thanks again.
Maybe its because I named him OZZY. He shakes and walks like him. I think I may offer him some vodka instead of treats

I have heard that dogs have the uncanny ability to turn out like their names. So, if you name a dog Digger, be prepared to have a digger.

Of course, I knew this when I let Nala keep her shelter name....and we sure did get a little lion!
