(new to this kind of chat, so pardon if I'm butchering proceedures...what, ME READ the fine print?) lol

Pup (Otis) has parvo and is at vet. My wife is a worry wart type (which if Otis lives, will be EXACTLY what saved him, cause I'd waited a couple more days...(I clearly don't deserve a wife as good as the one I got )

Ok..to my point

The wife is worried about spraying bleach mix on EVERYTHING, floors, yard, neighbors yard, laundry, car, laundry baskets, garage...(she can really go overboard)

We've only HAD the dog 48 hours.

So, just how extreme do we need to be? Do I need to bleach the whole yard, her car, our clothes, rugs, bed (he slept on it, and urinated on it first night)

I understood that once a dog had parvo (notice small p showing the virus lots of hate & disrespect) the dog is not likely to get it again, though it's not "impossible" as per my vet.

If the dog lives, won't it forever be a "carrier" of parvo, such that all the disinfecting we do will be rendered useless by subsequent droppings and contamination by Otis?

Thanks again for any thoughts

Richard

From what I understand, you have to bleach everything the dog has had contact with - toys, bedding, clothes, the yard, etc. Just everything the dog has had contact with. The parvo virus can live for years on something and that is where you have to be careful. If a dog that hasn't had the virus or its full series of parvo immunizations comes in contact with an infected area, then he will probably pick it up. If I left anything out, I want someone to correct me! Good luck with your dog, I really hope he makes it. What a horrible disease this is.

That last question caught my attention, if anyone can address it. I'll go do some research and see if I can find it in the meantime.

The question is, if the dog is a "carrier" of parvo after getting over it, will he be contaminating all the surfaces in the house all over again?

I can't imagine that every dog that has had parvo can give it to other dogs, or they would ALL have it. But perhaps an unvaccinated dog would be at risk? Anyone know?
