Had 2 dogs shot (murdered) by hunters Dec 26. Last Tuesday my wife went to animal shelter & picked up a new puppy "Otis".

Otis has been diagnosed with Parvo and is currently at the vet. We are reading up on this terrible disease and hope we got Otis to vet early enough to maximize his chances for success.

My understanding is, his stool droppings will be contageous and we will do the bleach thing "in general" and specifically, where we KNOW he went.

the REAL question we have is.. is his vomit also contageous?

He started to vomit in a number of places today inside the house (very little and very small, but there none the less) and we are concerned about those locations as well as the locations where he did his "other" business.

Keep your fingers crossed for Otis, he is really a darling puppy.

Thanks
Richard

Richard,

I'm very sorry to hear about Otis what a cute name. My Nala had parvo and surrived i would say BLEACH EVERYTHING when nala was at the hospital and i went to vist they made me step in bleach to kill anything that could be on my shoes and all i did was pet her through a cage so i think it's better to be safe then sorry. and that is awful about your other dogs so sad

Good luck and our prayers are with Otis

Keep us posted

Oh how sad. i did have a litter of rott pups that contracted distemper another horrible disease. I've heard, if you have a back yard, that area needs to be bleached as well. for future pets. i'm so sorry. i hope he pulls thru

lol what if your backyard is 250 acres lol. (true)

On serious note, our neighbor down the road had a recent litter of pups and evidently at least two of them came down with parvo also.

I tried to tell the wife we can disinfect the entire farm but it might STILL be lurking nearby.

Thanks for thoughts about Daisy and Wiggles. Wiggles so named because as she wagged her tail, her ENTIRE body from nose to tail writhed back and forth. She never wagged her "tail", she waived her entire body at you

We only got the dog Tuesday afternoon. So we had the dog here at the house about 48 hours.

can it really spread THAT fast and be worth THAT much effort after only 48 hours??

Thanks

oh i didnt relize he was that new to you. I'm sorry to hear that i would just bleach the house and a little around outside where you think he might have went. Also ask the vet what they think and there is alot of good advice in old post's here about Parvo look around and also in the General Section

Yes, Richard, unfortunately parvo IS that contagious. Even if you as a human walk in a yard that was contaminated, you can bring the virus home on the soles of your shoes. 10 years ago I lost a 7 month old German Shepherd puppy to parvo - she must have gotten it after the first walk thru the park. It is that bad. I know it would be a big hassle, but at least make sure you dissinfect the house and the areas around the house where your puppy played..... or did he really have the time to take the tour of your lands?

Let me reiterate a question that's evidently burning at the wife...

Do we need to be concerned about where he deficated, the answer evidently is yes.

**do we need to worry about where he URINATED??**

he deficated in only 2 or 3 places (in 48 hours) but he urinated in many more and that would significantly increase (front/back of house) the area for us to conisder.

Again, thanks

(what a sickeing disease)

Richard

They don't carry it through their urine, but I would still say YES. Because whereever the dog walked he has contaminated. No matter if he was just taking a whizz or sniffing the ground. Wherever you have walked to have also possibly contaminated. Two of mine had parvo, but also a friends dog had it at one point in time. One of their freands came over from another town. A couple weeks later his dog came down with parvo. Even though his dog never left the yard, the man must have carried the disease on his shoes, just like your dog can carry it where he walks. Cats can to and even birds.

Hi! There is a good note to this, and that is: If Otis recovers, it's not likely that he will catch it again. Once they go through parvo, thier imune system kicks in against it. At least that's what I was told. Plus I had a dog with it years ago, that I nursed back myself. But if you have other dogs and they are not vaccinated, then you could have a problem. I sure hope your boy makes it!!!! My prayers are with you! Susan

Right, and you would NOT want to bring another puppy in to the house without trying to disinfect as much as possible first and making sure he was as protected as he could be. Sometimes an older puppy is better, with all his shots and a more established immune system.

I recently found out Rawlings, the dog I was looking to adopt, had parvo when he was a pup. His previous owner said something about 6 months - like after 6 months he doesn't carry the virus anymore? I wasn't too clear on it. Has anyone heard anything about this? I took Nala to meet him (I didn't know about the parvo at the time). She has had all her shots and never been sick. I hope I didn't endanger her.

I'm sorry about the loss of your other dogs. That is horrible.

Good luck with otis...i just got done nursing a pup back to health with parvo...and it was hard but he pulled through....just make sure you clean everything you possibly can think of that he has been around...better safe than sorry...and parvo virus can live for up to 7 yrs where ever contamination has occured. Just make sure that if you bring any other dogs into your home that they are up to date on their shots.....although it is not a 100% safegaurd. Good luck!

This is what I was told..correct me if I'm wrong. If your dog pulls through parvo, thier immune system is stronger than if you had vaccinated for it.

Jamiya, I think Nala will be fine,,,but that's just me! You walk him, and go other places right? you don't know if a dog with parvo had been there before you...

Coyteeprince, I can't beleive someone shot your dogs....That's awful!!!!! I'm sorry...

Richard,

I just lost my 4 month old Lab to Parvo...Its a horrible virus! I seen that you had 250 acres? I have 1 acre and I'm not sure how I am going to bleach the whole yard! I read something that said if the tempreture out side is below 25 degrees then it will kill the virus. Well here in Michigan it has gone down to 7 degrees (that I know of, it could have gone down lower) I'm wondering if it did kill the virus. I did go out today and spray her droppings, the porch and where I thought she stepped. I'm wondering if that will be ok....I would like to get a puppy in 6 months or so.

I hope Otis pulls through...and I'm so sorry to hear about your 2 other dogs...how horrible!
